First baseman Nate Freiman continued his recent power surge on Thursday, slugging his 4th and 5th home runs of the season (and his 3rd and 4th in the last 7 days) and driving in 3 runs for the River Cats. Catcher Ryan Ortiz collected 3 hits, including his 1st home run, while shortstop Andy Parrino singled and doubled for Sacramento. Starter Sean Murphy had his roughest outing yet for the River Cats, allowing 7 runs on 7 hits and 4 walks in just 2 innings of work to take his 4th loss. RHP Jose Flores surrendered 3 runs in just 1 inning of relief, while RHP Deryk Hooker gave up 2 runs in 3 innings of work, and RHP Fernando Nieve tossed 2 scoreless innings to close things out for the Cats. And, after spending one day on the A’s roster, RHP Arnold Leon was optioned back to Sacramento on Thursday.

Starter Nate Long allowed 4 runs, 3 earned, over 5 innings to take his 1st loss on Thursday, while RHP Ryan Doolittle gave up 1 run in 2 innings of relief, and RHP Seth Frankoff got the final 6 outs for the RockHounds. Hiro Nakajima, who’s been hitting well while playing second base since joining the Hounds, had 3 hits and drove in a run. Catcher Beau Taylor doubled in a run, while first baseman Anthony Aliotti and outfielder Billy Burns had a pair of hits apiece, and designated hitter Kent Matthes went 0 for 1 with a walk in his first game for Midland since being sent down from Sacramento. Matthes took the place on the RockHounds roster of first baseman Max Muncy, who was placed on the disabled list Thursday with a broken middle finger suffered in last Sunday’s game. He joins teammates Addison Russell, D’Arby Myers, Ryan Lipkin, Raul Alcantara, Tanner Peters and Jesus Castillo on the Hounds’ DL.

Third baseman Renato Nunez singled, homered in the 8th inning to give Stockton the lead, and drove in 3 runs to help the Ports prevail on Thursday. First baseman Matt Olson slugged his 7th home run and second baseman Wade Kirkland hit his 1st for Stockton. RHP Josh Bowman had his first solid start of the season for the Ports, allowing 2 runs and striking out 6 over 6 innings of work, while RHP Kris Hall struck out 5 in 2 scoreless innings of relief to earn his 2nd win, and Austin House got the final 3 outs on Thursday.

 

MIDWEST LEAGUE  (Class-A)

RHP Kyle Finnegan had another solid start for the Snappers on Thursday, allowing just 1 run in 5 innings of work, and he left the game with a 2-run lead. But RHP Junior Mendez surrendered 4 runs in 2 innings of relief to allow Quad Cities to tie the game, and RHP Stuart Pudenz took the loss after letting the winning run reach base in the bottom of the 8th. Outfielder Tyler Marincov had 3 hits, including a double, drove in a run and stole a base. Designated hitter Jaycob Brugman doubled and walked twice, while first baseman Ryan Huck had 2 hits and drove in a run, second baseman Luis Baez doubled in a pair of runs, and shortstop Melvin Mercedes went 0 for 2 in his return from the disabled list for the Snappers.
