In his third game back after returning from the disabled list, outfielder Josh Whitaker had a big day for Midland, hitting his 4th home run in the 4th inning and belting his 5th homer in the 8th. Designated hitter Miles Head ripped his 3rd round-tripper, while first baseman Anthony Aliotti and outfielder Chad Oberacker each slugged their 2nd. But that still wouldn’t be enough for the RockHounds on Tuesday. Starter Shawn Haviland had a rare rough outing for the RockHounds, allowing 6 runs on 8 hits in the bottom of the 1st inning before exiting the game after getting just 2 outs. LHP Jeff Urlaub surrendered 3 runs in 2 1/3 innings, while RHP Blake Hassebrock gave up 1 run in 3 innings of work, and RHP Ryan Dull allowed a pair of runs in 2 innings of relief for the RockHounds. Outfielder Billy Burns returned to the starting lineup for the first time since developing a sore oblique 12 days earlier and went 0 for 5 with a stolen base. In other news, outfielder Kent Matthes was assigned to Midland after posting a .208/.279/.287 slash line in 26 games with Sacramento.

After looking impressive out of the bullpen, RHP Philip Humber made his first start for Sacramento on Tuesday, in place of the promoted Arnold Leon. Things didn’t turn out so well for Humber though and he allowed 3 home runs and 4 earned runs in just 3 innings of work to take his 2nd loss. Outfielder Shane Peterson and third baseman Alden Carrithers each singled, doubled and drove in a run, while recently-claimed outfielder Nick Buss went 1 for 4 and drove in a run in his first game for Sacramento. To make room for him on the River Cats roster, outfielder Kent Matthes was reassigned to Midland. And as RHP Arnold Leon made his way to Oakland to join the A’s for Wednesday’s doubleheader, catcher Stephen Vogt made an appearance as the designated hitter in an extended spring training game in Arizona on Tuesday.

Starter Manny Correa was pulled from Stockton’s game on Tuesday after throwing with noticeably low velocity during a scoreless 1st inning. There was no further word on his status after the game, but don’t be surprised if Correa ends up being the next A’s minor leaguer to land on the DL. Beloit starters Dylan Covey, Kyle Finnegan, Ronald Herrera and Lou Trivino could all be candidates for a one-way ticket to the warmer climes of sunny Stockton should another starter be needed on the west coast. LHP Omar Duran took over for Correa in the 2nd and allowed 2 runs while striking out 5 over 3 innings to take the loss, while RHP Micheal Ynoa, in his most impressive performance of the season, struck out 5 of the 6 batters he faced in 2 perfect innings of relief. The Ports managed just 7 hits on the night, with designated hitter Ryon Healy notching a single and a double in the loss. Meanwhile, RHP Tyler Hollstegge, who made just 2 relief appearances for Stockton, was reassigned to Beloit on Tuesday.

19-year-old RHP Ronald Herrera turned in another strong start for the Snappers, allowing just 3 hits over 5 2/3 scoreless innings on Tuesday. But his efforts were undone by Beloit’s bullpen and some shoddy defense, which combined to lead to an 8-run 7th inning for Peoria. RHP Lee Sosa surrendered 3 runs in 1/3 of an inning, while RHP Stuart Pudenz allowed 5 runs, 1 earned, in 2/3 of an inning with the help of errors by outfielder Tyler Marincov and third baseman B.A. Vollmuth as well as his own throwing error. Vollmuth hit a 2-run homer in the 4th to put Beloit on the board, while Marincov singled, doubled and stole a base, and outfielder B.J. Boyd singled, tripled and drove in a run for the Snappers. In other news, RHP Dominique Vattuone was sent back to extended spring training in Arizona and RHP Tyler Hollstegge was reassigned to the team from Stockton to help bolster Beloit’s bullpen.
