Former 1st-round draft pick Sean Manaea, who was recently acquired from Kansas City in the Ben Zobrist trade, couldn’t have made a much better impression in his debut for Midland on Friday. The big lefty allowed just 3 hits while walking none and striking out 9 over 7 shutout innings to earn the win for the RockHounds. The 23-year-old threw a total of 87 pitches, 62 of them for strikes, while RHP Tucker Healy pitched a perfect 8th and 9th to complete the 3-hit shutout for Midland. Outfielder Jaycob Brugman singled, tripled and drove in 2 runs, while first baseman Ryon Healy singled, doubled and scored a run, and outfielder Chad Oberacker had a pair of hits and a walk and drove in a run for the RockHounds. Meanwhile, with Manaea’s addition to the roster, RHP Tim Atherton was placed on the disabled list for Midland.

RHP Nate Long had another rough start for the Sounds, allowing 5 runs over 5 innings of work to take his 4th loss on Friday, while switch-pitcher Pat Venditte tossed 1 scoreless inning in his first rehab appearance for the Sounds. Left fielder Ryan Roberts reached base 3 times, on a double and 2 walks, while first baseman Anthony Aliotti had a pair of hits in the loss. Meanwhile, the A’s dealt Nashville RHP Ryan Cook to Boston for a player to be named later or cash. Cook had 8 saves and a 4.05 ERA in 30 games with the Sounds.

The Ports were shut out on just 6 hits as they lost their sixth straight on Friday. RHP Daniel Mengden, recently acquired from Houston in the Scott Kazmir trade, turned in his second straight strong start for Stockton, allowing 1 run on just 2 hits while striking out 5 over 7 innings of work, but he still ended up taking the loss on Friday. And the 22-year-old has now allowed 2 runs on just 3 hits while striking out 13 in 12 innings of work over his first 2 starts for Stockton since being acquired from the Astros organization. Second baseman Branden Cogswell had a pair of hits, while designated hitter Coco Crisp went 0 for 4 in his fourth rehab game for the Ports. RHP Casey Meisner, recently acquired from the Mets in the Tyler Clippard trade, was added to Stockton’s roster, while LHP Victor Veliz was reassigned to the Arizona League A’s.

Outfielder Joe Bennie had 3 hits, including a double, and drove in a run, while third baseman Jose Brizuela had a pair of hits and drove in a run in the loss.

RHP Dustin Driver had a solid start for Vermont, tossing 5 shutout innings on Friday, and he left the game with the lead. But LHP Kevin Duchene was charged with 4 runs in 2 1/3 innings of work to take his 1st loss, and RHP James Naile allowed 2 runs in just 2/3 of an inning in relief. Catcher Seong-min Kim singled and hit his 4th home run, while right fielder Seth Brown doubled, drew a pair of walks and scored a run. Shortstop Richie Martin singled, walked and stole a base, and center fielder Skye Bolt singled, doubled and scored a run in the loss.
