Third Baseman Mikey White

(1 for 4 / Home Run / 4 RBIs)

Third baseman Mikey White delivered the big blow for Midland on Friday night to help the RockHounds go 2-0 on the young season. With the game tied 3-3 and two men on in the bottom of the 6th, White stepped to the plate and whacked a 3-run homer over the left field wall to provide the margin of victory for Midland. White also drove in the RockHounds’ first run of the night with a ground out in the 2nd. Second baseman Melvin Mercedes had 2 hits and a walk and drove in a run, while Brett Vertigan, getting the start at first base, also singled twice and walked but was caught stealing. Catcher Santiago Chavez doubled and scored a run, and Sean Murphy, serving as the designated hitter for the night, went 1 for 3 and scored twice and is now 4 for 7 with 4 runs scored on the season. Starter Corey Walter allowed 3 runs over 6 innings of work to earn the win, while RHP Trey Cochran-Gill tossed 2 scoreless innings in relief, and RHP Nolan Blackwood pitched a perfect 9th to pick up the save. RHP Ben Bracewell is set to make the start for the RockHounds on Saturday, with RHP Norge Ruiz going on Sunday, and RHP Kyle Friedrichs taking the mound for Midland on Monday.

RHP Frankie Montas had a rough start for the Sounds, allowing 4 runs on 4 hits, 2 walks and a wild pitch in just 2/3 of an inning of work to take the loss on Friday. 6-foot-6 RHP Josh Lucas, who was recently acquired from the Cardinals in return for RHP Casey Meisner, took over after Montas’s early exit and threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings despite issuing 3 walks. RHP Ryan Dull allowed 1 run on 3 hits and a walk over 2 innings in his first rehab appearance with the Sounds. RHP Chris Bassitt, who was scheduled to take over for Montas on Friday, looked solid in relief, striking out 5 over 4 scoreless frames for Nashville. Shortstop Jorge Mateo continued his hot start, collecting 3 hits, including a double, and is now 5 for 9 on the season. But he got into a little trouble on the base paths – he was caught stealing in the 1st and picked off in the 8th. Right fielder Anthony Garcia doubled, and third baseman Sheldon Neuse had a pair of singles for the Sounds. And with the A’s still uncertain about the severity of Chad Pinder‘s knee injury, infielder Franklin Barreto was held out of the Nashville lineup on Friday. RHP Trevor Cahill is set to make the start for the Sounds on Saturday, with LHP Eric Jokisch going on Sunday, and LHP Brett Anderson taking the mound on Monday. And with outfielder Trayce Thompson set to join the A’s roster this weekend, RHP Daniel Gossett is expected to slide into the Sounds starting rotation soon.
