With the Stockton Ports set to start their season on Friday, the opening day roster of the A’s Single-A affiliate in the California League has now become official. Single-A teams can carry 30 players on the active roster, and the Ports, led by second-year manager Javier Godard, are opening the season with 17 pitchers and 13 position players on their active roster.
The team’s catching corps will consist of last year’s 8th-round draft pick, Davis Diaz, undrafted free agent signee Tommy Takayoshi and 22-year-old Venezuelan backstop Carlos Franco, who appeared in 29 games for Stockton last season.
The A’s second overall pick in the 2023 draft, shortstop Myles Naylor, will return for his third season with the Ports. And while he’s primarily played shortstop in the past, he’s expected to also see time at second and third this year. Last year’s 9th-round pick, third baseman Jared Sprague-Lott, and last year’s 12th-round pick, Ali Camarillo, are set to make their professional debuts on the left side of Stockton’s infield. They’ll be joined by last year’s 19th-round pick, Gunner Gouldsmith, who can play both second base and shortstop, C.J. Pittaro, an undrafted free agent signee who’s expected to see time at both corner infield positions, and switch-hitting first baseman German Ortiz, who hit .292 in 46 games for the ACL A’s last season.
Last year’s 10th-round pick, Cameron Leary, is set to highlight Stockton’s outfield this season. He’ll be joined by international free agent signees Pedro Pineda and Joseph Rodriguez, both of whom are right-handed hitters who appeared for the Ports last year. Lefty-swinging Cesar Franco is also set to begin the season as part of Stockton’s outfield mix.
The Ports will open the season with returning starting pitchers Jose Dicochea, Jackson Finley, Tzu-Chen Sha, Alejandro Manzano and Jefferson Jean back in the fold. They’ll be joined by 19-year-old Taiwanese lefty Wei-En Lin, 19-year-old Venezuelan righty Donny Troconis, and Nathan Dettmer, the A’s 5th-round pick in 2023 who missed most of last season due to injury, along with a number of college starting pitchers who were taken in last year’s draft, including Sam Stuhr (5th round), Riley Huge (13th round), Aidan Layton (17th round) and Tucker Novotny (18th round). Meanwhile, Stockton’s bullpen is set to include returning righties Luke Anderson and Wilfred Alvarado along with lefty Brayan Restituyo and 2024 draftees Ryan Magdic (14th round) and Blake Hammond (15th round).

Naylor = Too many Errors, too high of a strikeout percentage! Time for new blood for sure.
