CALIFORNIA LEAGUE (SINGLE-A)
Stockton Ports 5
Fresno Grizzlies 4
WP: Santos 1-1 / 10.13
Stockton starter Jake Garland turned in an impressive performance on Thursday night to help the Ports prevail over the Grizzlies. Last year’s 17th-round draft pick for the A’s struck out 7 while failing to allow a hit or a walk through 5 scoreless frames. The only runner to reach base while Garland was on the mound was due to a fielding error with one out in the 2nd inning. The 22-year-old righty threw a total of 69 pitches, 47 for strikes. Stockton held a 4-0 lead when RHP Micah Dallas took the mound in the bottom of the 6th, but the 23-year-old gave up 4 runs, 3 earned, to allow Fresno to tie the game. 20-year-old Venezuelan shortstop Jose Escorche singled twice, walked, stole a base and drove in the winning run with one out in the top of the 9th, while 3B T.J. Schofield-Sam singled, doubled twice, drove in a run and scored the winning run, and first baseman Kevin Richards singled twice and drove in a run for Stockton. 23-year-old Cuban RHP Pedro Santos tossed 2 scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win for the Ports.
