Nine games into this season’s Triple-A Pacific Coast League schedule, the Las Vegas Aviators are boasting the league’s best record at 7-2, and it’s the team’s offense that’s been doing much of the heavy lifting. The Aviators currently lead the league in most offensive categories, including hits, runs, home runs and stolen bases while also boasting the best batting average (.311), on-base percentage (.420) and slugging percentage (.526) in the league. Half a dozen of the team’s hitters are currently sporting an OPS over .900.
The team’s three most dangerous hitters in the early going have been Zack Gelof, who’s been splitting his time between second base and the outfield, outfielder Colby Thomas and, somewhat unexpectedly, 30-year-old veteran catcher Brian Serven. Gelof leads the team in hits (14), extra-base hits (7), walks (10) and home runs (4) while sporting a slash line of .412/.545/.853. Thomas’s 3 home runs are the second-most on the squad while his .704 slugging percentage is the sixth-best in the league among qualified hitters. Serven leads the team with 4 doubles while going 12 for 21 with 6 extra-base hits in 6 games, and his .571 batting average and .640 on-base percentage are both league bests.
Meanwhile, young outfielder Henry Bolte, infielder Brett Harris, who’s been playing third, first and second, and shortstop Drew Swift have been doing a great job of getting on base for the Aviators. Bolte leads the team in runs (11) and stolen bases (5) and is second on the team in walks (9) while sporting a .419 on-base percentage. Harris is boasting an impressive on-base percentage of .577, while Swift is batting .379 with an on-base percentage of an even .500.
Meanwhile, young RHP Kade Morris has been the standout in the starting rotation in the early going, allowing just 3 runs while notching 10 strikeouts through 11 innings of work. And in the bullpen, RHPs Nick Anderson, Eduarniel Nunez, Wander Suero, Joel Kuhnel, Yunior Tur and Nick Hernandez have combined to throw 19 2/3 scoreless innings in relief for Las Vegas. In other pitching news, RHP Luis Morales is being optioned back to Las Vegas and will join the Aviators’ starting rotation this week after issuing 8 walks and allowing 10 runs in 7 1/3 innings over his first 2 starts for the A’s this season.
