Las Vegas suffered a walk-off loss to Jacksonville in Saturday’s single-game Triple-A Championship match. Starter Ken Waldichuk was charged with 4 runs, just 1 earned, in 2 2/3 innings of work, while RHP Anthony Maldonado gave up 2 runs without recording an out in the 5th inning. The Aviators were down by two runs with one out in the top of the 9th when first baseman Bryan Lavastida stepped to the plate with two runners on and slugged a three-run homer to give Las Vegas a one-run lead heading into the bottom of the 9th. RHP Jake Walkinshaw entered to try to secure the save but surrendered a two-run homer with one out in the bottom of the 9th to take the loss and give Jacksonville a walk-off win. Third baseman Alejo Lopez singled, drew 3 walks and scored 3 runs, while right fielder Junior Perez walked twice, once with the bases loaded to bring home a run, and rehabbing center fielder Denzel Clarke singled in a run and came around to score on Lavastida’s homer in the 9th. After signing on as a minor league free agent in mid-August, Lavastida slashed .348/.404/.562 in 23 games for the Aviators. Former A’s farmhand Freddy Tarnok picked up the win in relief for Jacksonville. In other news, Las Vegas skipper Fran Riordan was named the Pacific Coast League manager of the year for the third time after leading the Aviators to an overall record of 83-67 and the PCL Championship title this season.
