Now that we’re about two-thirds to three-quarters of the way through the minor league season, let’s take a look at some of the A’s prospects who’ve been busy putting up some big numbers in the team’s minor league system…

Darell Hernaiz (Las Vegas)

A hot stretch in June and July has propelled Hernaiz to the top of the A’s leader board in multiple statistical categories. The 23-year-old infielder now leads all A’s minor leaguers in hits (118), runs (67) and doubles (28) while serving as the Aviators’ starting shortstop this year. Hernaiz has also increased his walk rate, leading to a .383 on-base percentage for Las Vegas this season. And since he is on the A’s 40-man roster, Hernaiz, who can also play second and third, could find himself rejoining the big club if a couple of impending free agent infielders currently on the A’s roster end up getting dealt before the trade deadline. Lansing shortstop Joshua Kuroda-Grauer is second in hits with 98, while Stockton outfielder Cameron Leary is second in doubles with 27, and Leary and former Las Vegas and current A’s outfielder Colby Thomas are tied for second in runs with 66.

Willie MacIver (Las Vegas)

When he hasn’t been busy serving as a backup backstop for the A’s, MacIver has been a consistent force in the Las Vegas lineup this season. The 28-year-old catcher boasts the best batting average (.352) and on-base percentage (.420) among all A’s minor leaguers with at least 175 at-bats this season. MacIver has driven in 41 runs in 48 games for Las Vegas, and his .936 OPS is best among all current Aviators with at least 175 at-bats.

Colby Thomas (Las Vegas)

Thomas led all minor leaguers with 80 extra-base hits last season and, despite being promoted to the big leagues from Las Vegas last week, his 41 extra-base hits still tie him with fellow outfielder Carlos Cortes for most among A’s minor leaguers this season. His 18 home runs are also tops in the A’s minor league system. The 24-year-old slugger’s 74 RBIs and .529 slugging percentage are second only to Cortes among A’s minor leaguers with at least 175 at-bats.

Carlos Cortes (Las Vegas)

Cortes, who was promoted to the big league club from Las Vegas last week, still leads the A’s minor league system with 77 RBIs, and his 41 extra-base hits are tied for tops in the system with fellow outfielder Colby Thomas. His .603 slugging percentage and 1.017 OPS are both bests among A’s minor leaguers with at least 175 at-bats this season, while his 17 home runs are second only to Thomas’s total, so it’s clear to see how the minor league free agent signee earned his recent promotion.

Cameron Leary (Stockton)

After getting off to a rather sluggish start for Stockton, Leary has just gotten hotter as the season has unfolded, and he’s current sporting a 1.057 OPS through 21 games in the month of July. Last year’s 10th-round draft pick for the A’s now leads all A’s minor leaguers with 66 walks, leading to a .386 on-base percentage, and 44 stolen bases, while being caught just 5 times. Leary’s 27 doubles are also second-most in the system, and he currently leads the Ports in hits, runs, RBIs, walks, doubles, extra-base-hits and stolen bases while also boasting the best OPS among all current Stockton hitters. Stockton infielder Jared Sprague-Lott has the second-most walks in the system with 65, while outfielder Henry Bolte’s 32 stolen bases are second-most among A’s minor leaguers.

Gage Jump (Midland/Lansing)

Jump has been the clear standout among all A’s minor league pitchers this season. The 22-year-old southpaw currently leads the system with 9 wins while also sporting the best ERA (2.08), WHIP (0.96) and K/9 (11.1) among A’s minor leaguers with at least 75 innings pitched. After posting a 2.32 ERA in 31 innings for High-A Lansing, he’s improved on that by putting up a 1.95 ERA in 55 1/3 innings for Double-A Midland. Luis Morales has the second-best WHIP (1.14) and K/9 (10.8) among A’s minor leaguers with at least 75 innings pitched, while Yunior Tur boasts the system’s second-best ERA (2.72).
