Pedro Pineda powered up to help the Ports prevail in their home opener on Tuesday. The 21-year-old Dominican center fielder slugged a solo shot in the 2nd inning to give Stockton an early lead and then belted a two-run blast in the bottom of the 4th to give the Ports back the lead. Pineda was signed for a reported $2.5 million bonus as a top international prospect back in 2021, but he didn’t hit a single home run in 82 at-bats for Stockton last season and slugged just 2 homers in 223 at-bats for the Ports in 2023, a number he’s now matched in just 12 at-bats this season. Shortstop Ali Camarillo hit a two-run homer for Stockton, and catcher Davis Diaz had a pair of hits and drove in a run for the Ports. Starter Jose Dicochea allowed just 1 run and struck out 7 in 5 frames to earn the win, while RHP Sam Stuhr, last year’s 5th-round pick for the A’s, was charged with just 1 unearned run through 3 frames, and LHP Tucker Novotny notched a scoreless 9th to close out the victory for Stockton.
