PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE (TRIPLE-A)
Reno Aces 3
Las Vegas Aviators 10
WP: Cushing 1-0 / 0.00
HR: Kurtz (1)
Last year’s top draft pick for the A’s, first baseman Nick Kurtz, had a big night at the plate to help lead Las Vegas to its second straight victory over Reno on Saturday. The 22-year-old slugger homered, doubled, singled, walked, drove in 3 runs and scored 4 times for the Aviators. Shortstop Darell Hernaiz doubled twice, drew a walk, drove in 3 runs and scored twice, and Hernaiz and Kurtz have each gone 4 for 7 with 3 extra-base hits through the first two games of the season. Left fielder Esteury Ruiz singled twice, walked and scored 3 runs, while right fielder Colby Thomas singled, walked twice and drove in a run, and catcher Willie MacIver doubled, drew a walk and drove in a pair for the Aviators. RHP Mason Barnett was unusually wild in his Triple-A debut. The 24-year-old issued 6 walks and struck out 3 while allowing just 1 run through 2 2/3 innings of work before making an early exit after throwing 71 pitches. RHP Jack Cushing tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief to pick up the victory for Las Vegas. RHP Gunnar Hoglund is set to make the start for the Aviators on Sunday.
