Within a few days after the end of the World Series, not only do a number of major league players become free agents, but a flood of minor league free agents also hit the open market.
Earlier this week, the A’s lost 26 players to minor league free agency, nine of whom have appeared in the big leagues with Oakland at some point. Of the nine players who’ve appeared with the A’s to become minor league free agents this week, outfielder Conner Capel is the only position player, while the eight pitchers include a number of familiar names – righthanders James Kaprielian, Daulton Jefferies, Chad Smith, Tayler Scott and Norge Ruiz and lefthanders Kirby Snead, Sam Long and Richard Lovelady.
Other interesting names to hit the free agent market include lefty Anthony Kay, whom the A’s claimed off waivers from the Mets just a couple of weeks ago, and outfielder Austin Beck, the A’s first-round draft pick in 2017 who compiled an OPS of .688 during his time in the A’s minor league system.
Thus far, the only minor league free agent officially signed by the A’s is righthander Vinny Nittoli, who has made half a dozen relief appearances in the big leagues and averaged 9.9 K/9 in Triple-A last season.
