The opening day 30-man roster for the A’s High-A affiliate Lansing Lugnuts was announced on Thursday. The team includes 15 pitchers and 15 position players and will be guided by first-time manager Phil Pohl, who served as the A’s bullpen catcher for the past six seasons.
The roster is headlined by the A’s top prospect, 20-year-old catcher Tyler Soderstrom, who was Oakland’s 1st-round draft pick in 2020. Other prominent position players on the team include 19-year-old Colombian outfielder Brayan Buelvas, who is the A’s 10th-ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline, 21-year-old first baseman/outfielder Lawrence Butler, who was the A’s 6th-round pick in 2018 and is currently ranked as the team’s #20 prospect, Oakland’s 1st-round pick in 2017, 23-year-old outfielder Austin Beck, as well as 22-year-old Cuban outfielder Lazaro Armenteros.
Some of the more high-profile members of this year’s pitching staff in Lansing include the A’s 2nd-round draft pick in 2020, 23-year-old right-handed pitcher Jeff Criswell, 2020’s 5th-round pick, 23-year-old righty Stevie Emanuels, as well as 20-year-old right-hander Joey Estes, who was recently acquired from Atlanta.
Five players from last year’s amateur draft will also be joining the squad: 6th-round right-hander Grant Holman, 7th-round third baseman Brett Harris, 8th-round shortstop Drew Swift, 10th-round infielder Jack Winkler and 14th-round outfielder Jonny Butler.
According to the team, the starting rotation is expected to be comprised of Estes, Criswell, Emanuels and Holman, along with the A’s 3rd-round pick in 2018, left-hander Hogan Harris, and right-hander Jake Walkinshaw, who was one of the top starters for last year’s Low-A Stockton Ports.
