Stockton scored a season-high 13 runs to secure its fifth straight victory on Sunday. After spending parts of three seasons with Beloit, RHP Xavier Altamirano was impressive in his first start for Stockton, allowing just 2 hits and striking out 8 while throwing 7 shutout innings to earn the win in his California League debut. The Ports put eight runs on the board in a big 1st inning, which was highlighted by catcher Collin Theroux‘s grand slam. Theroux also singled in the game, while left fielder Luke Persico singled, walked, homered and drove in 2 runs, and center fielder Luis Barrera collected 3 hits, including a double, and drove in a pair for the Ports.

The Sounds suffered their seventh loss in their last eight games on Sunday. Third baseman Sheldon Neuse singled twice and drove in the go-ahead run for Nashville in the bottom of the 4th inning. Neuse is now hitting .390 over his last 10 games for the Sounds. Designated hitter Anthony Garcia doubled, walked and scored the go-ahead run, while shortstop Jorge Mateo singled, swiped a pair of bases and scored the first run for the Sounds. Starter Raul Alcantara allowed just 1 run over 4 innings of work, but RHP Kyle Finnegan, who recently returned to action after spending more than a month on the disabled list, was charged with 3 runs in 1 1/3 innings of relief to suffer his 2nd loss for the Sounds. Meanwhile, Cuban RHP Norge Ruiz is set to make his Triple-A debut when he makes his first start for the Sounds on Monday.

The RockHounds snapped their six-game losing streak on Sunday. Catcher Sean Murphy led the way, hitting his 8th home run in the 2nd inning to put the Hounds on the board and then doubling in the go-ahead run in the top of the 4th. Murphy now leads all A’s minor leaguers with 25 doubles, 35 extra-base hits and a .534 slugging percentage. Right fielder Tyler Marincov had a pair of hits and drove in a run, while shortstop Richie Martin singled twice and scored a run, and designated hitter Brett Siddall drew a walk and doubled in the winning run in the top of the 9th for the RockHounds. Starter Brian Howard allowed 3 runs over 5 innings of work in his Double-A debut, while RHP Nolan Blackwood got the final five outs for the RockHounds to record his 2nd win for Midland.

Third baseman Jesus Lopez had a big game for Beloit, collecting a triple and a pair of doubles while driving in a run and scoring a run for the Snappers. Second baseman Trace Loehr drew a pair of walks and drilled a two-run homer, while shortstop Nick Allen had a pair of hits and drove in a run. Catcher Skyler Weber doubled in a run, and center fielder Austin Beck singled twice to raise his average to .303 on Sunday. Starter Jared Poche allowed 2 runs over 5 frames to pick up his 3rd win for the Snappers.

This year’s third overall pick for the A’s, shortstop Jeremy Eierman, hit his first professional home run, a two-run shot, for the Lake Monsters in the loss. After winning their first four games of the season, the AZL A’s suffered their second straight loss on Sunday. This year’s 14th-round draft pick for the A’s, RHP Gus Varland, made the start and tossed 1 scoreless inning, while this year’s 31st-round pick, RHP Alexander Pantuso, gave up 1 run in 1 inning of relief, and last year’s 20th-round pick, 18-year-old Puerto Rican RHP Osvaldo Berrios, allowed 2 runs and struck out 7 over 5 2/3 frames to take the loss for the A’s. 19-year-old catcher Cesarre Astorri and this year’s 6th-round pick, 17-year-old left fielder Lawrence Butler, each singled and scored a run in the loss.
