Top 5 Sounds of the Week

by Rachel Davis / A’s Farm Nashville Contributor

Each week, we’ll be taking a look at some of the top performers for the A’s top affiliate, the Triple-A Nashville Sounds, over the past week. This week covers the period from Monday, June 11 through Sunday, June 17. So, let’s see who was busy making “sounds” for Nashville last week…

First Baseman/Outfielder Nick Martini

nm605361Martini continues to be a potent offensive force for the Sounds. Last week, the 27-year-old went 12 for 26 with six walks, four doubles and two home runs while driving in nine runs. His second home run of the week was a two-out, three-run shot in the eighth inning that provided the margin of victory for Nashville against El Paso and helped the Sounds snap their four-game losing streak. Martini extended his on-base streak to 51 games on Monday and currently leads the Sounds with a .318 batting average and a .432 on-base percentage.

Shortstop Jorge Mateo

After getting off to a quiet start this season, Mateo’s bat’s been busy making a lot of noise lately. And he turned in perhaps his most impressive week at the plate for the Sounds last week. The 22-year-old went 10 for 22 with a pair of doubles, a triple and a home run while driving in eight runs for Nashville. In the process, Mateo raised his batting average 25 points last week, from .202 to .227.

Outfielder Anthony Garcia

Garcia had another productive week at the plate for the Sounds. The 26-year-old free agent signee went 9 for 21 while hitting two home runs, driving in three and scoring seven runs. He also demonstrated plenty of patience at the plate, drawing five walks while striking out just four times. Garcia extended his current hitting streak to ten games on Monday and is now slashing a solid .262/.385/.477 for the Sounds.

Outfielder BJ Boyd

After getting off to a strong start in April, Boyd cooled off a bit in May, but he’s picked back up again in June. Last week, the 24-year-old went 10 for 26 with a triple and a double while driving in three and scoring five runs. After a solid week at the plate, Boyd ended the week with a seven-game hitting streak while raising his batting average from .264 to .277.

Pitcher Eric Jokisch

Jokisch turned in an outstanding performance last Friday against El Paso, continuing his recent run of solid work for the Sounds. The 28-year-old allowed just one run and fanned a season-best eleven batters over 6 2/3 innings to lower his ERA from 4.95 to 4.62 for the season.
