The A’s top pick in this year’s draft, LHP A.J. Puk, made his professional debut for the Lake Monsters on Tuesday. The 21-year-old was on a short leash in his initial start but he performed well, tossing 2 scoreless and hitless innings for Vermont. Puk threw a total of 17 pitches – 12 for strikes and 5 for balls – and all six of his outs came on ground balls. He was followed on the mound by 21-year-old Venezuelan LHP Ivan Andueza, who allowed 3 runs over 5 2/3 innings to suffer his 2nd loss for the Lake Monsters. This year’s 12th-round draft pick for the A’s, right fielder Luke Persico, collected 3 hits, including a double, stole a base and scored Vermont’s only run in the loss. With the All-Star Game in San Diego on Tuesday, it was a light schedule throughout the minor leagues, but most affiliates will be back in action on Wednesday.
