RHP Tim Atherton turned in his best start yet for Midland on Thursday, allowing just 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 7 over 8 scoreless innings to earn his 5th win for the RockHounds as they shut out San Antonio in the opening game of the series. RHP Andres Avila got the final three outs in the 9th to complete the shutout for the Hounds. Third baseman Renato Nunez hit a 2-run homer in the top of the 1st, while left fielder Jaycob Brugman singled in a pair in the 7th, and first baseman Matt Olson and right fielder Josh Whitaker had a pair of hits apiece for the RockHounds. In other news, Olson and Nunez were both selected to participate in the Futures Game, which will be played on Sunday, July 12 in Cincinnati.

RHP Brad Mills delivered another impressive start for the Sounds on Thursday, allowing just 4 hits over 8 scoreless innings to earn his 3rd win as Nashville shut out Memphis in the rubber match of the 3-game series. It marked the second straight start that Mills has shut out the competition and he’s now failed to allow a run in his last 15 innings. RHP Arnold Leon pitched a perfect 9th to complete the shutout for the Sounds. Center fielder Craig Gentry had 3 hits, including his 3rd home run to lead off the game in the top of the 1st, while shortstop Niuman Romero, right fielder Jake Smolinski and first baseman Dayan Viciedo had a pair of hits apiece for Nashville.

LHP Dillon Overton had another solid start for Stockton on Thursday, allowing 2 runs while striking out 7 over 5 innings of work, but he still ended up taking his 4th loss for the Ports. Shortstop Franklin Barreto had 3 hits, including a double, and scored Stockton’s second run in the 7th, while outfielder Tyler Marincov doubled in the Ports’ first run in the 6th as the team snapped its 9-game winning streak on Thursday.

RHP Daniel Gossett had a rough outing on Thursday, allowing 5 runs over 4 2/3 innings to take his 7th loss. Third baseman Jose Brizuela belted his 4th home run for Beloit, while second baseman Trent Gilbert singled and tripled. Center fielder Jamed Harris singled and walked twice, and right fielder Justin Higley tripled and scored a run in the loss. Meanwhile, RHP Dominique Vattuone, shortstop Tim Proudfoot and outfielder Shawn Duinkerk joined the Snappers on Thursday, while RHP Corey Miller was reassigned to Vermont and infielder Edwin Diaz was sent to the Arizona League A’s.

RHP Jon Massad tossed 5 shutout innings to earn his 1st win for the Lake Monsters. A couple of top ten draft picks made their debuts for Vermont on Thursday. 7th-round RHP Kyle Friedrichs and 9th-round LHP Jared Lyons both allowed 1 earned run in 1 inning of work. Vermont was down by two runs after seven innings, but a big 3-run 8th helped lead the Lake Monsters to victory. Third baseman Gabriel Santana homered to put Vermont on the board in the 3rd and doubled in the winning run in the 8th, while designated hitter Chris Iriart had a pair of hits and a walk, and second baseman Jesus Lopez and shortstop Trace Loehr both singled and drove in a run for Vermont. Meanwhile, RHP Dominique Vattuone and outfielder Shawn Duinkerk were promoted to the Snappers and RHP Corey Miller was reassigned to the Lake Monsters.

 

ARIZONA LEAGUE  (Rookie Short-Season)

21-year-old Venezuelan RHP Yordy Alejo tossed 3 shutout frames in extra innings to earn the win as the A’s prevailed in a 12-inning affair on Thursday. 6th-round RHP Bowdien Derby allowed 1 unearned run in 1 inning of work in his debut for the A’s. Shortstop Eric Marinez drove in 2 runs, including the winning run in the top of the 12th, while 8th-round catcher Nick Collins singled in a pair of runs to give the A’s the lead in the 4th, and second baseman Carlos Hiciano and 19th-round outfielder Seth Brown had a pair of hits apiece for the A’s.
