With two on, two outs and the game tied in the top of the 5th, shortstop Franklin Barreto tripled in 2 runs to give the Ports a lead they would not relinquish in the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader at Lancaster. Barreto singled in another run in the 7th, while third baseman Michael Soto singled and tripled in a pair, and first baseman John Nogowski and designated hitter J.P. Sportman had a pair of hits apiece for the Ports. Starter Andres Avila allowed 1 run in 2 1/3 innings of work, while RHP Jonathan Joseph tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the win, and RHP Brendan McCurry picked up his 2nd save despite allowing 2 runs in 2 innings of relief for Stockton.

In his second start for the Sounds, LHP Barry Zito was charged with 4 runs in 5 2/3 innings of work, but Nashville still held a lead when he left the game. Center fielder Billy Burns had another big game, collecting a triple, a double and a walk, and scored twice, while left fielder Jason Pridie had 3 hits and stole a base, and second baseman Joey Wendle tripled and drove in 3. RHP Fernando Rodriguez gave up the tying run in the 8th and the game went to extra innings, where RHP Kevin Whelan ended up surrendering the winning run in the bottom of the 10th to take the loss.

The Ports managed just 3 hits in the first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader. Outfielder J.P. Sportman doubled and scored the team’s only run, while shortstop Franklin Barreto and first baseman John Nogowski both singled in the game. Starter Dylan Covey allowed 5 runs over 4 1/3 innings to take the loss.

Problems with the lights at Pohlman Field in Beloit caused the Snappers’ home opener to be suspended after 4 ½ innings on Wednesday. Prior to the suspension, RHP Brett Graves allowed 2 runs and struck out 5 in 5 innings of work. The game will be resumed on Thursday – lights willing!
