With the game tied in the bottom of the 11th, center fielder Ben McQuown stepped to the plate and, on the the first pitch he saw, slugged his first professional home run to win the game in a walk-off for Vermont on Friday. McQuown also walked, singled twice, scored twice and stole his 3rd base for the Lake Monsters. Left fielder Justin Higley doubled, tripled and drove in 3 runs, while right fielder Dayton Alexander singled doubled and drove in a run, and this year’s 16th-round draft pick for the A’s, third baseman Jose Brizuela, went 0 for 5 in his debut for Vermont. Starter Cristhian Perez allowed 5 runs over 4 innings of work. 2nd-round pick RHP Daniel Gossett gave up 1 run in 2 innings of relief in his first appearance for the Lake Monsters, while 9th-round pick LHP Mike Fagan pitched a perfect 1 2/3 innings in his Vermont debut, and RHP Blake McMullen tossed a scoreless 10th and 11th to pick up the win.

After not allowing a run in his last two starts, RHP Chris Jensen gave up 6 runs, 5 earned, over 4 1/3 innings to take his 7th loss on Friday, while RHP Ryan Doolittle allowed 2 runs over 2 innings, and LHP Frank Gailey and RHP Seth Frankoff combined to toss 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief. This year’s 22nd-round pick for the A’s, RHP Brendan McCurry, tossed 2 scoreless innings in his debut for Beloit, while converted infielder Sam Roberts gave up the winning run in the top of the 10th to take his 2nd loss for the Snappers. Outfielder Jaycob Brugman hit a 2-run homer in the 1st inning, while 1st-round pick Matt Chapman went 0 for 4 in the game and is now 4 for 15 since joining the Snappers.

The A’s top high school pitching pick in this year’s draft, 8th-round RHP Branden Kelliher, made an impressive debut on Friday. The 18-year-old allowed just 1 hit while walking none and striking out 4 over 2 innings of work for the A’s. 20th-round RHP Koby Gauna gave up 4 runs in 2 1/3 innings to take the loss, while RHP Phillip Ortiz surrendered 3 runs over 1 2/3 innings, and 26th-round RHP Rob Huber allowed 5 runs in 2 innings of relief. The A’s managed just 2 hits in the game. Designated hitter Robert Kuhn singled in a run, while outfielder Jonesy Zarraga singled and stole a base in the loss.
