A’s Minor League Team Leaders

by Bill Moriarity / A’s Farm Editor

Franklin Barreto

With the first two months of the minor league season almost in the books, it seems like a good time to take a look at the A’s minor league team leaders in a few key hitting and pitching categories. And it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to see the names of top prospects like Franklin Barreto, Matt Chapman and A.J. Puk high atop our list of A’s minor league team leaders.

Leaders are included for all four of the A’s full-season affiliates – Nashville, Midland, Stockton and Beloit. A minimum of 100 at-bats is required for the hitting categories and a minimum of 40 innings is required for the ERA and WHIP categories for pitchers. An asterisk indicates not just a team leader but also an organizational leader in a particular category, and the stats are complete through games of Sunday, May 28. Some of these names you may expect to see atop the lists, while others might come as a bit of a surprise!

LHP Evan Manarino turned in his second straight impressive start for Stockton on Thursday, putting up 6 strikeouts over 7 shutout innings to post his 4th win for the Ports. The 24-year-old southern California native has now failed to allow a run or a walk in 13 innings over his last 2 starts for Stockton. And in his first appearance since returning to the Ports from the RockHounds, LHP Cody Stull pitched 2 perfect innings in relief to complete the 6-hit shutout as Stockton prevailed for the fifth time in its last six games on Thursday. Left fielder Tyler Ramirez had a big night at the plate for the Ports. Last year’s 7th-round draft pick provided all the offense his team would need with a pair of solo shots, one in the 4th inning and one in the 9th, to give him a total of 5 round-trippers on the season, and catcher Sean Murphy collected 3 hits, including a double, for Stockton. Meanwhile, after making a pair of relief appearances for the Ports, RHP Chris Jensen was reassigned to the RockHounds on Thursday.

Another day, another great performance by a Sounds starter – and on Wednesday, it was RHP Paul Blackburn’s turn. The 23-year-old struck out 6 over 7 scoreless innings to earn the win and help Nashville notch its second consecutive shutout and its fourth straight win. Blackburn has now failed to allow a run over his last 13 frames, while Tuesday’s starter, RHP Daniel Mengden, is currently riding a 10-inning scoreless streak, and RHPs Daniel Gossett and Jharel Cotton failed to allow any runs in their last starts as well. RHPs Tucker Healy and Simon Castro each contributed 1 scoreless inning in relief to close out Wednesday’s 6-hit shutout for the Sounds. First baseman Matt Olson singled, doubled, walked and drove in a run, while second baseman Franklin Barreto doubled and scored a run, and center fielder Jaycob Brugman drew 3 walks, included a bases-loaded walk to bring home a run for the Sounds in the bottom of the 2nd. And with A’s RHP Bobby Wahl landing on the disabled list with a shoulder strain, Nashville RHP Zach Neal rejoined Oakland’s roster on Wednesday.

Hurlbutt gave up 2 hits and struck out 3 over 4 scoreless frames before being replaced by Manarino, who was even better, allowing 2 hits while walking none and striking out 5 over 5 shutout innings to earn the win for Stockton. And Manarino has now allowed just 1 earned run without issuing a walk over his last 11 innings of work for the Ports. Second baseman Josh Vidales singled twice, walked twice and scored his team’s first run, while left fielder Tyler Ramirez had 2 hits, walked and drove in a run, and center fielder Skye Bolt singled, drew a pair of walks, stole a base and scored the final run for Stockton.

The good news this week is that Matt Chapman returned to action for Nashville, while Joey Wendle also got back on the field for the Sounds, and Skye Bolt brought his game back to Stockton.

Franklin Barreto’s bat has started heating up again but, unfortunately, one of the team’s top young pitching prospects, Daulton Jefferies, is headed for Tommy John surgery.

Shortstop Franklin Barreto

The A’s top hitting prospect, shortstop Franklin Barreto, has been busy living up to the hype during the first few days of the minor league season, and Saturday was no exception. For the second straight game, the 21-year-old collected 3 hits and clubbed a 2-run homer for the Sounds, and he’s now 8 for 14 with 2 home runs and a triple in the season’s first three games. Right fielder Jaff Decker had another big night at the plate as well, collecting 3 hits, including a double, while driving in a run, and he’s now 8 for 13 with a pair of doubles to start the season. Second baseman Chad Pinder reached base 4 times, on 3 hits and a walk, and is now batting .400 on the season, while designated hitter Chris Parmelee had a pair of singles and drove in a run, and Renato Nunez, starting at third base in place of the injured Matt Chapman, singled in the Sounds’ first 2 runs of the game in the top of the 1st inning. Chapman is suffering from left wrist soreness and is currently considered day-to-day, according to Sounds play-by-play man Jeff Hem’s report on Nashville’s pre-game show. RHP Cesar Valdez, signed as a minor league free agent in the offseason, was solid in his first start for the Sounds, allowing 2 runs and striking out 5 over 5 innings of work to earn the win, while RHP Tyler Sturdevant, another recent minor league free agent signee, allowed 1 run in 2 innings of relief in his Nashville debut, and RHP Tucker Healy got the final six outs to close out the win for the Sounds on Saturday.
