RHP Sonny Gray had another strong start on Saturday, this time in front of a hometown crowd in Nashville, the city where he was born and where he starred for Vanderbilt University before being drafted by the A’s. Gray tossed 6 scoreless innings to earn his 4th win and lower his ERA to 2.19. Left fielder Scott Moore collected 3 hits, including a pair of doubles, while center fielder Michael Choice slugged his 7th home run and drove in 3 runs for the River Cats. Starter Josh Bowman allowed 5 runs, just 1 earned, over 5 innings of work. The 4 unearned runs came after shortstop Dusty Coleman’s throwing error in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Outfielder Chad Oberacker homered in the top of the 1st inning to put Midland on the board, while outfielder Jake Goebbert’s home run tied the game in the 5th, but RHP Mike DeMark surrendered a run in the 6th to take the loss. With outfielder Jeremy Barfield’s elevation to Sacramento, outfielder Josh Whitaker was promoted to Midland and, while serving as the designated hitter, drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in his debut with the RockHounds. He’ll be joined there by A’s starter Brett Anderson, who is set to begin a rehab assignment with Midland.

Shortstop Addison Russell homered for the second straight night and drove in 3 runs for the Ports. In other news, with RHP Pedro Vidal’s promotion to Sacramento, RHP Brett Hunter has been added to the Ports’ roster from extended spring training.

Worth Noting: Grant Green, getting the start at second base on Tuesday, blasted a 3-run homer in the 6th inning to give the River Cats the lead, which they never relinquished. Third baseman Josh Donaldson and catcher Derek Norris, in his first game back with Sacramento, each contributed 2-run homers, while hot-hitting outfielder Shane Peterson collected 3 hits to raise his batting average since joining the team to .442. Left-hander Brett Anderson, in his second rehab start with Sacramento, fared a little better than his last time out, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits while walking 2 and striking out 4 over 4 innings of work. Right-hander Rich Thompson picked up the win with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Worth Noting: Starter Jacob Brown had another sooid outing, allowing just 2 runs over 6 innings, but the Ports’ bullpen let the lead slip away. Catcher Max Stassi ended the game in the bottom of the 10th inning with a walk-off double to drive in the winning run. First baseman A.J. Kirby-Jones slugged a 3-run homer to give the Ports the lead in the 4th inning, and outfielder Chad Oberacker contributed a solo shot in the 5th.

Catcher Phil Pohl clubbed a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 9th inning to bring the team within a run, and shortstop Addison Russell, serving as the designated hitter for the day, tripled and drove in 2 runs in the loss.

Worth Noting: Starter Bruce Billings allowed 5 runs in 5 innings of work to take the loss. Right-hander Fautino De Los Santos came on to toss 2 scoreless innings to give the River Cats a chance to climb back into it. Third baseman Stephen Parker drove in first baseman Kila Ka’aihue in the 7th inning and again in the 9th. Sacramento added another run in the 9th when outfielder Jermaine Mitchell drove in outfielder Shane Peterson, who was making his first appearance with the River Cats since his promotion from Midland.

Starter Sean Murphy had one of his shakier outings for Stockton, allowing 5 runs on 8 hits in 5 innings of work. Right-hander Zack Thronton picked up the win, despite giving up the tying-run to San Jose in the top of the 9th.

Third baseman Wade Kirkland hit a 2-run homer in the 6th inning, and shortstop Sean Jamieson hit a 2-run shot in the 7th. Starter Max Perlman allowed 5 runs over 7 innings, and right-hander Jose Macias picked up the win in relief, despite allowing 2 runs in the 9th to tie the game.
