The RockHounds won on Sunday to reduce their magic number for a playoff berth to one with one game left to play. A Midland win or a Corpus Christi loss on Monday will put the Hounds in the Texas League playoffs for the fourth straight season. RHP Grant Holmes was the star of the game, allowing just 1 unearned run on 3 hits while striking out 5 over 8 innings of work to earn his team-leading 11th win. The 21-year-old extended his league-leading strikeout tally to 150 and also set a RockHounds single-season franchise record with the total. Catcher Sean Murphy homered for the second straight night to tie the game in the top of the 5th inning. Second baseman Max Schrock had a pair of hits and drove in the winning run in the 9th, while first baseman Viosergy Rosa singled twice and drove scored a run, and Murphy drove in another run with a sacrifice fly in the 9th. RHP Kyle Finnegan got the final three outs to notch his 9th save for the RockHounds. Meanwhile, RHP Heath Fillmyer is set to make the start for Midland on Monday.

The Ports exploded for 22 runs as they shut out Visalia on just 2 hits to move back into a three-way tie for first place in their division on Thursday. First baseman Seth Brown continued his red-hot second half, collecting his 18th double of the season and slugging his second grand slam in his last four games. The 25-year-old walked, scored twice and drove in 5 runs on the day to extend his league-leading RBI total to 104, and his 27th home run tied him for the league lead. Center fielder Skye Bolt had 5 hits, including a home run, and drove in 6 runs, while shortstop Mikey White homered, doubled, walked and drove in 4. Third baseman Branden Cogswell collected 4 hits, and second baseman Nate Mondou and right fielder Luis Barrera both had 3 hits and drove in a pair for the Ports. Starter Brandon Bailey was outstanding on Thursday, allowing just 1 hit while striking out 7 over 5 frames to earn his 2nd win for Stockton, while RHP Boomer Biegalski returned from the disabled to throw 1 scoreless inning in relief for the Ports. First baseman Chris Iriart also returned from the disabled list but was not in the lineup on Thursday, while shortstop Richie Martin and RHP Miguel Romero were both placed on the DL for Stockton.

The Ports prevailed in 12-innings to help keep their playoff hopes alive on Wednesday. Left fielder Brett Siddall hit his 20th home run to tie the game in the 8th inning and then scored the winning run on designated hitter Mikey White’s RBI double in the bottom of the 12th as Stockton won in a walk-off. Siddall also singled in the game, and his .303 batting average and .500 slugging percentage are both bests among all current Ports batters. First baseman Seth Brown walked 4 times, scored a run and stole a base, while third baseman Branden Cogswell drew 3 walks and singled in a pair of runs for the Ports. Starter Logan Shore allowed 3 runs over 7 innings of work, while RHP Kyle Friedrichs pitched 4 perfect frames in relief, and RHP Nolan Blackwood tossed a scoreless top of the 12th to pick up his 1st win for the Ports.

The 21-year-old collected 4 hits, including a home run and a triple, while driving in 4 runs and scoring 3 times for the Sounds. Left fielder Mark Canha singled twice, doubled twice and drove in 3, while center fielder Jaff Decker singled, doubled, walked twice, stole a base and drove in a run. Catcher Beau Taylor had 3 hits and scored 3 runs, and designated hitter Josh Phegley went 1 for 4 with a walk and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in his second rehab game with the Sounds. The 30-year-old slugger singled, tripled, homered, walked and drove in 5 runs, including the tying and winning runs in the top of the 8th for the Sounds. Third baseman Renato Nunez singled twice and scored 3 times, while catcher Beau Taylor walked and singled in a run. Starter Ben Bracewell picked up the win despite surrendering 5 runs in 7 innings of work, while RHP Raul Alcantara tossed 2 scoreless innings in relief to secure his 3rd save for the Sounds.

Designated hitter Jake Smolinski had a big night at the plate in his second rehab appearance for the Ports, collecting 5 hits, including a home run and a double, while driving in 5 of Stockton’s 10 runs in the game. Third baseman Mikey White homered for the second time in the last three nights, while shortstop Richie Martin singled, tripled and scored twice, and catcher Argenis Raga singled, doubled and drove in a pair for the Ports. RHP Logan Shore turned in a strong start on Sunday, striking out 7 over 5 scoreless frames to earn his 2nd win for Stockton, while LHP Brandon Marsonek pitched 3 perfect innings in relief to pick up his 1st save for the Ports. In other news, Ports play-by-play man Zack Bayrouty announced on Sunday that Stockton infielder Sheldon Neuse has been promoted to Double-A Midland. Neuse has put up an impressive .386/.457/.675 slash line since joining Stockton after being acquired from the Nationals organization in the Ryan Madson/Sean Doolittle deal. Though Neuse had been splitting time between shortstop and third base for the Ports, he’s likely to spend the bulk of his time at the hot corner for Midland with A’s shortstop-of-the-future Jorge Mateo also on the RockHounds roster.

Center fielder Yairo Munoz singled, homered and drove in a pair, while catcher Matt McBride doubled, walked and scored a run, and left fielder Kenny Wilson singled twice, stole a base and drove in a run for Nashville. Meanwhile, the A’s sent outfielders Mark Canha and Jaycob Brugman back to the Sounds and recalled outfielder Boog Powell and RHP Michael Brady on Friday.

Sportman, who left Tuesday’s game after being hit in the hand with a pitch, had a big night at the plate, collecting 3 hits, including a home run, while driving in a pair. Catcher Sean Murphy and left fielder Tyler Ramirez both homered, while third baseman Jordan Tarsovich had 3 hits, and first baseman Viosergy Rosa doubled, walked and drove in 3 runs for the RockHounds.

RHP Chris Jensen turned in a strong start to help the Sounds win their third straight on Friday. The 26-year-old allowed just 1 unearned run over 6 innings of work to notch his 5th win for Nashville. Rehabbing RHP Ryan Dull pitched a perfect frame in the 7th, while RHP Tucker Healy gave up 4 runs in just 2/3 of an inning of relief, and LHP Patrick Schuster got the final out to secure his 1st save of the season. Sounds hitters slugged four home runs, all solo shots. Shortstop Franklin Barreto blasted his 11th in the 1st, while catcher Ryan Lavarnway clubbed his 6th in the 3rd. Rehabbing second baseman Chad Pinder belted his 1st in the 6th, and left fielder Yairo Munoz smacked his 4th in the 7th. Munoz also singled and stole a base for the Sounds. Meanwhile, RHP Frankie Montas and first baseman Matt Olson were both recalled by the A’s, while first baseman Chris Carter was signed to a minor league deal and sent to Nashville, and infielder Melvin Mercedes was reassigned to the Sounds roster on Friday.
