Prospect Of The Game:

Pitcher Evan Manarino

(7 IP / 6 H / 0 ER / 0 BB / 6 K / Win)

LHP Evan Manarino turned in his second straight impressive start for Stockton on Thursday, putting up 6 strikeouts over 7 shutout innings to post his 4th win for the Ports. The 24-year-old southern California native has now failed to allow a run or a walk in 13 innings over his last 2 starts for Stockton. And in his first appearance since returning to the Ports from the RockHounds, LHP Cody Stull pitched 2 perfect innings in relief to complete the 6-hit shutout as Stockton prevailed for the fifth time in its last six games on Thursday. Left fielder Tyler Ramirez had a big night at the plate for the Ports. Last year’s 7th-round draft pick provided all the offense his team would need with a pair of solo shots, one in the 4th inning and one in the 9th, to give him a total of 5 round-trippers on the season, and catcher Sean Murphy collected 3 hits, including a double, for Stockton. Meanwhile, after making a pair of relief appearances for the Ports, RHP Chris Jensen was reassigned to the RockHounds on Thursday.

And the A’s 2nd-round draft pick in 2014 has now allowed just 4 earned runs in 19 innings over his last 3 starts. RHP Aaron Kurcz gave up a 3-run homer in the bottom of the 9th for Nashville. First baseman Matt Olson homered for the second straight night, belting a 3-run blast in the 3rd inning and singling in another run in the 5th, while third baseman Matt Chapman slugged a solo shot in the 4th, and second baseman Joey Wendle drilled a 2-run drive in the 7th to help the Sounds win their second straight over Sacramento. In other news, Nashville manager Ryan Christenson told Sounds play-by-play man Jeff Hem on Monday’s pre-game show that he didn’t expect catcher Bruce Maxwell, who’s currently on the disabled list with an oblique injury, to be back before mid-June at the earliest.

HR – Nunez (10), Chapman (8), Barreto (6)

Prospect Of The Game:

The Sounds scored a season-high 13 runs in their victory over Fresno on Thursday night. Shortstop Franklin Barreto led the attack, collecting 3 hits to raise his average to .320 and driving in 5 runs to increase his team RBI lead to 27. The 21-year-old slugged his 6th home run of the season, a 3-run shot in the 3rd, then lined a two-out double to left to drive in a pair of runs in the 4th, and singled to load the bases but was left stranded in the 7th. Third baseman Matt Chapman also had 3 hits, including his 8th home run, a solo shot to put the Sounds on the board in the 3rd, while designated hitter Renato Nunez notched his team-leading 10th double as well as his team-leading 10th home run on a deep drive that left the park and drove in 3 runs for Nashville. Meanwhile, starter Daniel Mengden was impressive in his third rehab start for the Sounds, allowing just 1 run on 4 hits while walking none and striking out 7 to earn his 1st win this season. Reliever John Axford also looked strong in his third rehab appearance, retiring the side on 5 pitches in the 7th, and he’s expected to rejoin the A’s roster shortly. RHP Chris Smith surrendered 2 runs in 2 innings of relief for the Sounds. And with rehabbing RHPs Mengden and Chris Bassitt currently working in the Sounds rotation alongside RHPs Jharel Cotton, Daniel Gossett and Paul Blackburn, RHPs Smith, Zach Neal and Raul Alcantara will all be working out of the Nashville bullpen for the foreseeable future.

“Prospect” Of The Game:

Pitcher Sonny Gray

(6 IP / 2 H / 0 ER / 0 BB / 7 K / Win)

After tossing 5 scoreless frames in a rehab appearance for Stockton last weekend, A’s starter and Nashville native Sonny Gray turned in another impressive performance, this time in front of a hometown crowd at First Tennessee Park in the heart of Music City on Thursday. Gray allowed just 2 hits while walking none and striking out 7 in 6 scoreless innings to earn the win for the Sounds. Over his two rehab starts, Gray has allowed a total of just 3 hits while walking none and striking out 13 over 11 shutout innings, and he appears ready to rejoin the A’s rotation next week. It was an easy win for Nashville on Thursday. Shortstop and leadoff batter Franklin Barreto belted his team-leading 4th home run in the bottom of the 1st inning to give the Sounds an early edge, and Nashville never lost the lead. Barreto also drew a pair of walks in the game, while right fielder Mark Canha singled and slugged a 2-run shot. Designated hitter Ryan Lavarnway homered, doubled and walked, and second baseman Joey Wendle doubled, tripled and drove in 3 runs in the win. And with the A’s activating RHP Kendall Graveman, first baseman Matt Olson was optioned back to Nashville on Thursday.

Prospect Of The Game:

Pitcher Dalton Sawyer

(5 IP / 0 H / 0 ER / 0 BB / 8 K / Win)

Starter Dalton Sawyer delivered one of the most impressive performances of any A’s minor league hurler so far this season on the front end of a 3-hit shutout win for the Snappers. Last year’s 9th-round pick for the A’s threw 5 perfect frames, striking out 8 while facing the minimum 15 batters without allowing a base runner to earn his 2nd win on Sunday. And Sawyer has now failed to allow a run over his last 13 innings of work for the Snappers. He was followed on the mound by last year’s 10th-round pick, RHP Mitchell Jordan, who allowed 3 hits over 4 scoreless frames to secure the save. The Snappers scored all 8 of their runs on home runs on Sunday. Left fielder Luke Persico launched a 2-run homer in the 3rd, while third baseman Edwin Diaz drilled a 3-run drive in the 6th. Shortstop Eric Marinez slugged a solo shot in the 7th, and center fielder JaVon Shelby tagged a 2-run shot in the 8th to help the Snappers win their second straight on Sunday.

WP – Mann 1-0 / 0.00

Prospect Of The Game:

Pitcher Brandon Mann

(4 IP / 1 H / 0 ER / 0 BB / 2 K / Win)

Working on the back end of a tandem start, veteran LHP Brandon Mann was nearly perfect over 4 shutout innings, allowing a single to the first batter he faced in the 4th inning, then retiring the next twelve batters in order without allowing another base runner in his impressive season debut for the RockHounds. And the 32-year-old’s strong effort ended up earning him the victory on opening night in Midland. RHP Corey Walter was the front-end starter in Thursday’s tandem arrangement, allowing just 1 run over 3 innings of work. RHP Sam Bragg held Tulsa scoreless in the 8th, and RHP Jake Sanchez pitched a perfect 9th to pick up the save. First baseman Viosergy Rosa doubled, singled in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 1st and drove in another run with a sacrifice fly in the 5th. Right fielder Tyler Marincov drove in the RockHounds’ first run with a sacrifice fly and also walked and singled in the game, while left fielder J.P. Sportman singled, walked, stole a base, scored twice and made an impressive catch in left field to save a potential run in the 4th inning for the RockHounds on Thursday. Meanwhile, the tandem of RHPs James Naile and Grant Holmes are scheduled to take the mound for Midland on Friday.
