Stockton won with the help of four home runs on Friday, the biggest of which came off the bat of center fielder Skye Bolt. With the bases loaded, two outs and the Ports down by two runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning, Bolt stepped to the plate and slugged a grand slam to give Stockton a lead it would never surrender. Left fielder Tyler Ramirez, designated hitter Brett Siddall and catcher Argenis Raga each homered in the first two frames, but the Ports were still down by a pair of runs before Bolt’s big blast. Starter Kyle Friedrichs allowed 5 runs over 5 innings of work in his return to Stockton from Double-A Midland, but he still managed to pick up the win for the Ports. RHPs Joey Wagman and Armando Ruiz each tossed 2 scoreless innings in relief, with Ruiz securing his 1st save for Stockton. In other news, first baseman Chris Iriart was placed on the disabled list on Friday, while Stockton LHP Cody Stull was reassigned to the RockHounds. 23-year-old Cuban RHP Norge Ruiz was promoted from the AZL A’s to the Ports and is scheduled to make his first start for Stockton on Saturday, and A’s third baseman Matt Chapman is also set to join Stockton on Saturday on a rehab assignment.

WP – Kurcz 3-3 / 6.66

HR – Maxwell (2)

Prospect Of The Game:

Catcher Bruce Maxwell

(1 for 3 / Home Run / 3 RBIs)

The Sounds put six runs on the board in the first two innings on Friday to help them salvage a split in their four-game series with Iowa. Catcher Bruce Maxwell, appearing in just his second game since returning from the disabled list, slugged a 3-run homer in the 2nd inning, while right fielder Mark Canha singled in a pair of runs in the 1st, and second baseman Joey Wendle singled twice and scored a run for the Sounds. Scheduled starter Michael Brady was a last-minute scratch, so LHP Felix Doubront, who’s been working in short stints out of the bullpen while making his way back from Tommy John surgery, made the start and allowed 1 run over 2 2/3 innings before giving way to RHP Aaron Kurcz, who threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief to earn his 3rd win. The Chronicle’s Susan Slusser later reported that Brady is set to replace RHP Zach Neal as the long man in the A’s bullpen on Saturday, with Neal heading back to Nashville. RHP Frankie Montas, who’s worked strictly out of the bullpen so far this season, will make his first start for the Sounds on Saturday, and RHP Dustin Hurlbutt will be called up from Stockton to take the mound in one of Sunday’s two scheduled contests for the Sounds. Meanwhile, third baseman Matt Chapman collected his first major league hit and drove in 3 runs, including the winning run, in his second major league game for the A’s on Friday.

Prospect Of The Game:

Pitcher A.J. Puk

(6 2/3 IP / 4 H / 3 ER / 2 BB / 12 K / Win)

LHP A.J. Puk turned in another dominating performance in Stockton on Saturday night. Through the first 6 frames, last year’s top draft pick for the A’s struck out 10, while failing to issue a walk, and allowed 1 run on just 3 hits. He issued his first 2 walks of the game in the top of the 7th and also surrendered an RBI double before exiting with two outs and two men on, one of whom would ultimately come around to score. Puk ended up striking out a career-high 12 and walking 2 while allowing 3 runs on 4 hits over 6 2/3 innings to post his 4th win for the Ports. And the 22-year-old has now struck out 27 while allowing just 5 hits over his last 17 innings for Stockton. (You can see what A’s assistant general manager Billy Owens just had to tell us about Puk, as well as a number of other A’s prospects, here.) After Puk departed, RHP Armando Ruiz took over and tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings in his Stockton debut to close out the victory. Catcher Sean Murphy had another big night at the plate, collecting 3 hits, including his 5th home run, while second baseman Branden Cogswell singled twice, doubled and drove in 2 runs, and center fielder Skye Bolt singled, doubled, walked and drove in a pair for the Ports. And along with Ruiz joining the squad from extended spring training, RHP Matt Sergey was released, and it was announced on Saturday that A’s LHP Sean Doolittle would continue his rehab assignment with Stockton and would make another appearance for the Ports on Monday.

With one out, a man on and the game tied in the bottom of the 9th, shortstop Franklin Barreto lined a triple to right-center field to bring home the winning run as the Sounds won in a walk-off in their final home game on Thursday. Including his big 9th-inning triple, Barreto had 3 hits in just his second game for the Sounds. Left fielder Colin Walsh singled, doubled, walked and drove in 2 runs, while catcher Bryan Anderson tripled in a pair, and first baseman Matt Olson singled and walked twice in the win. RHP Jharel Cotton turned in his second straight strong start, striking out 6 over 5 2/3 shutout innings, and he left with the game a scoreless tie on Thursday. But RHP Bobby Wahl walked 4 and was charged with 2 runs in just 2/3 of an inning in relief, while RHP Ryan Brasier gave up 2 runs over 1 1/3 innings of work, and RHP Eduard Santos picked up the win despite giving up the tying run in the top of the 9th for Nashville. The Sounds have already clinched the division title and are set to begin playoff play in Oklahoma City next Wednesday, September 7. On Thursday afternoon, A’s general manager David Forst told 95.7 The Game’s Damon Bruce that the A’s first September call-ups from Nashville will primarily be starting pitchers, and he mentioned RHPs Daniel Mengden, Jharel Cotton and Raul Alcantara as the most likely candidates. He also suggested that recent Sounds Joey Wendle and Chad Pinder are likely to split time at second base for the A’s the rest of the way this season.
