HR: J.Diaz (1)

Prospect Of The Game:

Pitcher Seth Shuman

(4 IP / 2 H / 0 ER / 0 BB / 7 K)

The Lansing Lugnuts made a smashing debut as the A’s newest affiliate on Tuesday. The team, skippered by Scott Steinmann, pushed runs across the plate in each of the first four frames while keeping Lake County off the board through the first seven innings. Starting pitcher Seth Shuman, the A’s 6th-round draft pick in 2019, looked dominant on the mound, allowing just two base runners on a pair of singles while striking out 7 over 4 shutout innings. While Shuman, who put up an ERA of 2.39 in 11 appearances for Vermont in 2019, barely seemed to break a sweat on Tuesday, Japanese import Shohei Tomioka, who followed him on the mound, looked solid in his debut, tossing 2 scoreless innings in relief to earn the win. LHP Dalton Sawyer, who hadn’t pitched since 2017 after undergoing Tommy John surgery, and RHP Aiden McIntyre, who started 22 games for Beloit in 2019 but is shifting to the bullpen this year, each contributed a scoreless inning in relief, with Sawyer striking out the side in the 7th inning and McIntyre notching a pair of strikeouts in the 9th. 2019’s 33rd-round pick for the A’s, RHP Charles Hall, allowed Lake County’s only run in the 8th. Meanwhile, 20-year-old Colombian third baseman Jordan Diaz was the offensive star of the night for the Lugnuts. Diaz drilled a two-run homer with two outs in the bottom the 1st inning to give Lansing an early lead and then added a double in his next at-bat. Catcher Drew Millas, the A’s 7th-round pick in 2019, singled, doubled, drew a walk and drove in a run in his pro debut, while designated hitter Cobie Vance picked up a pair of hits and drove in a run, and center fielder Michael Guldberg, last year’s 3rd-round pick for the A’s, doubled in a run in his first game as a pro. First baseman Jonah Bride, who posted a .371 on-base percentage for the Ports in 2019, reached base three times, on a single and a pair of walks. Designated hitter Collin Theroux and center fielder Jhonny Santos, who also joined the organization as a minor league free agent, both contributed singles to account for the RockHounds’ remaining hits in the loss. Stockton was shut out on just 2 hits on Tuesday to suffer the loss on opening night. 21-year-old starting pitcher Osvaldo Berrios, who was the A’s 20th-round draft pick back in 2017, allowed 2 runs over 4 frames to take the loss, while tandem starter David Leal looked impressive, throwing 3 scoreless innings in relief. Last year’s top draft pick for the A’s, catcher Tyler Soderstrom, doubled in his first at-bat as a pro and later drew a walk as well. The 19-year-old also allowed a pair of passed balls behind the plate. Designated hitter Lazaro Armenteros, batting leadoff, singled, walked and stole a base, while 18-year-old shortstop Robert Puason went 0 for 3 with a pair of strikeouts in his pro debut with the Ports.
