The Hounds shut out the Hooks on just five hits on Friday. Shortstop Edwin Diaz slugged a grand slam in the 3rd inning to help the RockHounds build an early lead that they would never relinquish. Diaz then added a three-run blast in the 6th inning and also drew a walk in the game, and the 23-year-old has now gone 5 for 13 with 3 home runs and 11 RBIs over his last 3 games for Midland. RHP James Naile turned in a strong start, allowing just 4 hits over 6 shutout innings, while LHP Tyler Alexander tossed 2 scoreless innings in relief, and RHP John Gorman got the final three outs in the 9th to complete the shutout. Las Vegas suffered its second straight loss to Albuquerque on Friday. RHP Marco Estrada made the start and gave up 4 runs over 3 innings of work in his first rehab appearance for the Aviators, while RHP Daniel Mengden allowed 3 runs in 3 innings of relief, and RHP J.B. Wendelken surrendered 2 runs in the top of the 9th to take the loss for Las Vegas. Right fielder Mark Payton hit a two-run homer in the 2nd inning, slugged a solo shot in the 5th and also singled in the game, while first baseman Seth Brown had 3 hits, including his team-leading 35th home run – a two-run shot – for the Aviators in the loss. Meanwhile, catcher Beau Taylor, who had been designated for assignment, was claimed off waivers by Toronto on Friday.
