The Snappers were shut out on just 2 hits on Tuesday night. Second baseman Jesus Lopez doubled to lead off the 3rd inning and designated hitter Trent Gilbert singled to lead off the 4th. Starter Dustin Driver walked the first 3 batters he faced to load the bases in the bottom of the 1st inning and ended up allowing 3 runs to score in the inning, which would turn out to be the only runs of the game. All told, Driver was charged with 3 runs, 4 hits and 4 walks over just 2 2/3 innings to take the loss. But RHP Kyle Friedrichs came in and tossed 4 shutout innings in relief. And combined with his impressive opening day start, last year’s 7th-round draft pick for the A’s has now thrown 9 scoreless innings to start the season.

Monday, April 11th: Sean Manaea Wins in Nashville Debut while Chris Iriart’s Hot Hitting Helps Beloit Win Again

The A’s top pitching prospect, LHP Sean Manaea, made an impressive Nashville debut on Monday night. Manaea gave up just 2 singles and no runs through the first 5 innings and ended up allowing 1 run on 4 hits while walking none and striking out 6 over 5 1/3 innings to earn the win. Center fielder Tyler Ladendorf homered to lead things off for the Sounds in the bottom of the 1st inning and then doubled and scored Nashville’s second run in the 3rd. Left fielder Jake Smolinski homered in the 6th and also singled and walked twice in the game, while designated hitter Andrew Lambo singled, tripled and drove in 4 runs, and catcher Bruce Maxwell singled and doubled in a run in the 4th. RHP Andrew Triggs closed out the victory by striking out the side for the Sounds in the 9th.

2014’s 5th-round draft pick for the A’s, RHP Heath Fillmyer, had a 1-hit shutout going through 5 innings before surrendering a run and exiting with two outs in the top of the 6th inning on Sunday. Fillmyer ended up allowing just 1 run on 3 hits over 5 2/3 innings to earn the win in his California League debut. RHP Carlos Navas tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief, while RHP Ben Bracewell allowed 1 run over the final 2 innings to pick up the save for the Ports. Third baseman Jose Brizuela and designated hitter James Harris drove in runs with back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the 5th, while center fielder B.J. Boyd and second baseman Joe Bennie followed with back-to-back RBI singles in the same inning to account for all of Stockton’s scoring on the day. In other news, A’s infielder Eric Sogard is scheduled to join Stockton on Monday to begin a rehab assignment.

RHP Daniel Mengden was impressive in his Double-A debut for Midland on Saturday. The 23-year-old Texas native, acquired from Houston in the Scott Kazmir deal, struck out 8 while tossing 6 scoreless frames and left the game with a one-run lead. Third baseman Matt Chapman smacked his 1st home run of the season in the top of the 6th inning to give the RockHounds the edge. But RHP Corey Walter surrendered a run in the bottom of the 7th to tie the game. And the match remained knotted until the top of the 9th when the RockHounds loaded the bases. Then, with two outs and the game tied, first baseman Ryon Healy doubled to left field to clear the bases and give the Hounds a solid 3-run advantage. RHP Aaron Kurcz pitched a perfect 8th and 9th to keep Arkansas in check and pick up the win for Midland. Meanwhile, RHP Joel Seddon is set to make the start for the RockHounds in his Double-A debut on Sunday.

Friday, April 8th: Jesse Hahn’s 6 Scoreless Frames & Renato Nunez’s 11th Inning Triple Help Nashville Win in a Walk-Off

After losing his spot in the A’s starting rotation this spring, RHP Jesse Hahn looked strong in his Nashville debut on Friday night. Hahn allowed just 2 hits and 3 walks while striking out 5 over 6 scoreless innings, throwing 74 pitches – 50 strikes and 24 balls – and he left the game with a one-run lead. Second baseman Joey Wendle doubled with one out in the bottom of the 1st inning and then came around to score on right fielder Matt Olson’s two-out double to give Nashville the early edge. Wendle also singled and stole a base in the game while Olson would notch another double and draw a walk. LHP Patrick Schuster took over in the 7th after Hahn’s exit and struck out 4 in 2 perfect innings of relief. The Sounds maintained their slim 1-0 lead until the top of the 9th, when RHP Angel Castro came on to secure the save but instead surrendered a leadoff home run to catcher Yasmani Grandal to tie the game. LHP Daniel Coulombe struck out the side in the top of the 10th and RHP Andrew Triggs followed with a scoreless 11th. Third baseman Max Muncy, who’d walked twice in the game, led off the bottom of the 11th with a single and then came around to score when designated hitter Renato Nunez smacked a triple into center field to give the Sounds the walk-off win on Friday night. Nashville native Triggs picked up the win in his debut with the hometown team. And with LHP Eric Surkamp joining Oakland to make the start against Seattle on Friday, outfielder Andrew Lambo was optioned back to Nashville. Meanwhile, LHP Dillon Overton is set to make his first start for the Sounds on Saturday.

Thursday, April 7th: 1st Inning Bombs by Tyler Marincov & Jaycob Brugman Help Ports & Hounds Cruise to Victory on Opening Night

The Ports won big on opening night, pushing across 13 runs on 16 hits, before an announced crowd of 3,833 fans at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton on Thursday. Left fielder and cleanup hitter Tyler Marincov got things going early by blasting a 2-out, 2-run homer in the bottom of the 1st to give his team an early lead it would never surrender. He would also single in another run and come around to score in the 2nd and then double and score again in the 6th. Center fielder James Harris hit a 2-run homer in the 2nd and also singled in the game, while second baseman Joe Bennie singled, doubled and drove in 3. Last year’s 2nd-round draft pick for the A’s, shortstop Mikey White, tripled in his first at-bat for Stockton and later singled and drove in a run, and catcher Argenis Raga and designated hitter B.J. Boyd had a pair of hits apiece for the Ports. RHP Daniel Gossett, 2014’s 2nd-round pick for the A’s, got the opening night start and was solid, holding Modesto scoreless through the first 4 innings. He surrendered a pair of runs in the 5th and ended up allowing just 2 runs while striking out 6 over 5 innings of work to earn his 1st win for Stockton, while RHPs Lou Trivino and Kyle Finnegan both pitched 2 scoreless innings in relief for the Ports. 2014’s 3rd-round pick, RHP Brett Graves, is set to make the start for Stockton on Friday.

Both position players who were on the bubble for the A’s – Sam Fuld and Eric Sogard – opened the season on the disabled list, making the decision about what to do with each of them an easy one for Oakland. Pitchers Felix Doubront, Henderson Alvarez, R.J. Alvarez and Jarrod Parker also opened the season on the DL. And Doubront’s last-minute arm injury opened the door for outfielder Andrew Lambo to open the season with the big league squad…

It looks like two promising infield prospects – Yairo Munoz and Richie Martin – will start the 2016 season on the sidelines. Munoz has dealt with nagging heel and quad injuries this spring, while Martin underwent knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus and is not expected to be back before late May.
