With two outs, two on and the game tied in the top of the 8th, third baseman Ryon Healy singled in both base runners to help the Hounds win and extend their lead over Corpus Christi in the Texas League South Division second-half standings to four games. Second baseman Colin Walsh had 3 hits and singled in a run in the 9th, while shortstop Chad Pinder and right fielder Matt Olson each drove in a run in the 1st. RHP Jake Sanchez had his fourth straight quality start on Saturday, allowing 2 runs and striking out 6 over 7 innings of work to earn his 10th win, while RHP Brendan McCurry picked up his 1st save despite giving up a run in the bottom of the 9th for Midland.

On Saturday, RHP Cody Martin turned in one of his best starts since joining the Sounds a little over a month ago from the Atlanta organization. Martin tossed 5 shutout innings before giving up 1 run in the top of the 6th and ended up allowing 1 run while striking out 6 over 5 1/3 innings to earn his 1st win for Nashville. Relievers Phil Coke, Ryan Dull and Angel Castro then combined to throw 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief, with Castro closing things out to pick up his 3rd save. Outfielder Jake Smolinski slugged a 2-run homer in the 1st inning to give the Sounds an early lead, while second baseman Joey Wendle singled, doubled and drove in a run in the 2nd, and shortstop Andy Parrino had a pair of hits in the win.

With the game a scoreless tie in the bottom of the 8th on Saturday, center fielder Brett Vertigan singled to lead things off, moved to third on a single by shortstop Yairo Munoz and then came around to score the winning run on catcher Jacob Nottingham’s groundout. Starter Dylan Covey was solid, allowing just 1 hit over 4 shutout innings before exiting the game after taking a sharp line drive off his jaw. Covey initially crumpled to the ground after taking the shot but eventually exited the game under his own power, and he reportedly passed a conscussion test but may need stitches. After Covey’s exit, RHP Sam Bragg threw 3 scoreless innings in relief, while RHP Ben Bracewell picked up the win after pitching a perfect 8th, and RHP Corey Walter got the final three outs to earn his 2nd save for Stockton.

Starter Junior Mendez allowed 3 runs over 5 innings of work to suffer his 9th loss on Saturday, while RHP Jon Massad surrendered 5 runs in just 2/3 of an inning in his first game for the Snappers. Third baseman Joe Bennie had another big night at the plate for Beloit, homering in the top of the 1st to give the Snappers an early lead and then singling in another run in the 8th, while second baseman Tim Proudfoot also singled in a run in the loss.

With two outs and the game tied in the bottom of the 6th on Saturday, outfielder Brett Siddall singled, stole second base and then came around to score the winning run on outfielder Steven Pallares’s single. Meanwhile, catcher Seong-min Kim singled in a pair of runs in the 7th.  21-year-old Venezuelan RHP Angel Duno was solid in his debut for the Lake Monsters, allowing 2 runs on just 3 hits over 5 innings of work, while LHP Derek Beasley threw 3 scoreless innings in relief to earn his 3rd win for Vermont.

 

ARIZONA LEAGUE  (Rookie Short-Season)

Rehabbing infielder Tyler Ladendorf went 2 for 2 while playing shortstop for the AZL A’s on Saturday in his first game back in action after undergoing ankle surgery during the last week of April. Unfortunately, the A’s were shut out on 7 hits on Saturday. 18-year-old starter Dakota Chalmers, this year’s 3rd-round draft pick for the A’s, walked 2 struck out 2 over 2 scoreless and hitless innings, while 19-year-old Venezuelan RHP Argenis Blanco gave up 2 runs in 4 innings of relief to take the loss for the A’s.
