Farmhand Of The Game:

Third Baseman Ryan Roberts

(4 for 4 / Double / RBI)

Third baseman Ryan Roberts collected 4 hits for the Sounds for the third time this season on Tuesday. The 34-year-old veteran also drove in a run and scored a run to help the Sounds snap their 5-game losing streak. Outfielder Jake Smolinski, claimed off waivers by the A’s earlier in the week, went 2 for 4 and drove in a pair of runs in his debut for Nashville, while Dayan Viciedo, who’s primarily been playing first base since joining the Sounds, doubled, walked and scored a run. Starter Barry Zito held Memphis scoreless through 4 innings and gave up just 1 run through 6. But he put three men on and allowed one to score in the bottom of the 7th before leaving with no outs. Zito ended up being charged with 3 runs in 6 innings of work and earned his 5th win. RHP Dan Otero tossed 2 scoreless innings while also allowing one of Zito’s runners to score, and RHP Ryan Cook picked up his 6th save despite giving up 1 run in the 9th. Meanwhile, Sounds outfielder Kent Matthes was released on Tuesday.

Farmhand Of The Game:

Catcher Seong-min Kim

(Grand Slam)

Despite getting a grand slam courtesy of catcher Seong-min Kim in the 8th inning, the Lake Monsters still came up two runs short on Tuesday. After missing all of last season while battling injuries, the A’s 3rd-round supplemental pick in 2013, LHP Chris Kohler, made his debut for Vermont on Tuesday, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits while walking none and striking out 3 over 5 innings of work, and he left with the game a 3-3 tie. But an 8-run 6th inning did in the Lake Monsters. RHP Tyler Willman was charged with 6 runs in just 1/3 of an inning to take the loss, while RHP Jesus Rivas gave up 3 runs in 2 2/3 innings of relief. 12th-round first baseman Chris Iriart walked, singled and drove in a pair of runs, while outfielder Shawn Duinkerk and 15th-round second baseman Ryan Howell each singled and drove in a run, and shortstop Jesus Lopez and designated hitter Iolana Akau had a pair of hits apiece. Kim’s grand slam in the bottom of the 8th brought the Lake Monsters within two runs, but that’s as close as they would get as they suffered their fourth loss in five games this season.
