RHP Joel Seddon turned in his best start so far this season for Stockton on Thursday, throwing 6 shutout innings to earn his 4th win for the Ports. RHP Sam Roberts then tossed 3 scoreless innings in relief to complete the shutout and earn his 1st save for Stockton. The Ports put 9 runs on the board on 14 hits on Thursday. Center fielder Brett Vertigan collected 3 hits, including a triple, and drove in a run, while right fielder J.P. Sportman singled 3 times and drove in 3, and second baseman Branden Cogswell also had 3 singles and drove in a run. Shortstop Franklin Barreto singled, tripled and scored twice, and first baseman John Nogowski singled in a pair for the Ports.

LHP Barry Zito started out Thursday’s game by throwing 5 shutout innings to extend his scoreless streak to 26 innings. But the veteran’s streak came undone when he surrendered a 3-run homer in the bottom of the 6th to give the Dodgers a 3-run lead, and Zito ended up taking his 5th loss for the Sounds. Catcher Bryan Anderson slugged his 2nd home run of the season in the top of the 2nd for the Sounds’ only run of the game. Meanwhile, infielder Ryan Roberts returned from the temporarily inactive list, while LHP Joe Paterson was released, and RHP A.J. Griffin was transferred to Nashville to continue his rehab assignment with the Sounds.

For the second time in as many nights, the RockHounds came up just one run short, and they ended up losing their sixth straight on Thursday. Starter Jake Sanchez was a little shaky, allowing 7 runs, 4 earned, over 5 innings of work to take his 5th loss, while RHPs Ryan Doolittle, Ryan Dull and Seth Frankoff combined to hold the Hooks scoreless over 4 innings. Midland managed to mount a spirited comeback but came up just a bit short. Renato Nunez, making his fifth start at first base, singled, doubled and drove in 3, while shortstop Wade Kirkland clubbed a 2-run homer. Second baseman Colin Walsh collected 3 hits, and outfielder Jaycob Brugman singled, doubled and drove in a run in the loss. Meanwhile, RHP Jonathan Joseph will move into Midland’s starting rotation with struggling LHP Chris Lamb shifting to the bullpen.

 

MIDWEST LEAGUE  (Class-A)

The Snappers were shut out on just 6 hits on Thursday. Outfielder James Harris doubled for Beloit’s only extra-base hit of the game, while third baseman Jose Brizuela reached base twice, on a single and a walk. Starter Junior Mendez had another rough outing, allowing 5 runs on 10 hits over just 5 innings of work to take his 4th loss for the Snappers. Meanwhile, Beloit RHP Dustin Driver was reassigned to Vermont and RHP Corey Miller returned to the Snappers roster.
