PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE  (Triple-A)

Round Rock Express  6

Nashville Sounds      8

WP – Parker 1-0 / 6.30

Farmhand Of The Game:

Shortstop Andy Parrino

(Double / 2 RBIs)

With the bases loaded and Nashville down by a run in the bottom of the 4th, shortstop Andy Parrino doubled home a pair of runners to provide the Sounds with the go-ahead run, and they would never look back on Friday. Third baseman Ryan Roberts and outfielders Kent Matthes and Jason Pridie each had a pair of hits and drove in a run, while second baseman Joey Wendle doubled in Nashville’s first run of the game, and outfielder Craig Gentry singled, walked twice, scored twice and stole a base for the Sounds. But it was rehabbing RHP Jarrod Parker who provided the biggest drama of the night. With two outs in the top of the 6th, Parker unleashed a very wild pitch and immediately collapsed on the field while gripping his surgically-repaired right arm and writhing in pain. He eventually walked off the field in the company of the training staff. No further reports were available on his condition after the game, but it’s definitely not the kind of development that anyone wanted to see in Parker’s return from Tommy John surgery. Parker actually ended up earning the win after allowing 5 runs, 4 earned, on 10 hits and 1 walk while striking out 3 in 5 2/3 innings of work, and RHP Ryan Cook picked up his 2nd save with a scoreless 9th. In other news, the A’s promoted RHP Angel Castro to the major league roster and returned RHP R.J. Alvarez to Nashville. The team also designated outfielder Alex Hassan for assignment once again and acquired outfielder Matt Carson from the Dodgers for cash and assigned him to Nashville. And recent Sounds RHP Chad Smith, who had been designated for assignment, was dealt to the Angels for cash.

Farmhand Of The Game:

Second Baseman Colin Walsh

(Double / 2 RBIs)

With one out, one on and Midland down by a run in the top of the 8th, second baseman Colin Walsh drove in the tying run and came around to score the go-ahead run later in the inning on a fielding error. Walsh singled, doubled, walked and drove in 2 runs in the game, while catcher Carson Blair singled, tripled, walked and scored twice, and first baseman Matt Olson doubled and walked for the RockHounds. RHP Tim Atherton turned in a solid start, allowing 2 runs, just 1 earned, while striking out 6 over 5 innings of work. RHP Ryan Doolittle tossed 1 scoreless inning in relief, while RHP Ryan Dull pitched 2 perfect frames to earn his 2nd win, and RHP Tucker Healy got the final three outs for his 1st save.

Farmhand Of The Game:

Outfielder Brett Vertigan

(Home Run / 2 RBIs)

After leading by 6 runs at one point, the Ports ended up losing by a run on Friday. Starter Kyle Finnegan allowed 3 runs, on a 3-run homer in the 4th, and exited after finishing the 5th with a 3-run lead. RHP Joey Wagman took over in the 6th and gave up 4 hits and 2 runs before leaving with two men on and just one out in the inning. RHP Sam Bragg then came on and allowed Wagman’s two baserunners to score before putting two more men on and then surrendering a 3-run homer. All told, San Jose scored 7 runs in the 6th to take a 4-run lead. Stockton would come back to score 3 runs in the 7th but would come up a run short. Center fielder Brett Vertigan and second baseman Melvin Mercedes, both of whom were just promoted from Beloit, turned out to be two of the Ports’ top hitters in the game. Vertigan singled, homered, walked, stole a base and drove in 2 runs in his Stockton debut, while Mercedes had a pair of singles, walked twice, scored twice, drove in a run and swiped a pair of bases for the Ports. With Vertigan and Mercedes joining the Stockton roster, third baseman Jose Brizuela was sent to Beloit and infielder Chih Fang Pan was released.
