After missing most of the season, catcher Luke Montz appears to be raring to go down in the desert. Montz smashed 3 home runs – a 3-run shot in the 1st inning followed by a solo shot in the 3rd and another in the 8th – and ended up driving in 5 of his team’s 6 runs to help the A’s win their Arizona League finale on Thursday night. Starter Carlos Navas allowed 2 runs and struck out 5 over 6 innings of work to earn his 6th win, while RHP Tyler Willman gave up 1 run in 2 innings of relief, and RHP Jesus Rivas pitched a perfect 9th to post his 7th save for the A’s.

RHP Deck McGuire had a rough start for the River Cats on Thursday, allowing 9 runs over 7 innings of work to take his 4th loss for Sacramento, while RHPs Tucker Healy and Seth Frankoff each tossed 1 scoreless inning in relief. First baseman Daric Barton bashed 2 home runs and drove in 3 of the River Cats’ 4 runs on the night, while right fielder Nick Buss had a pair of doubles and drove in a run, and center fielder Billy Burns singled, doubled and scored for Sacramento. With the loss, the River Cats and Reno are now tied for the division lead with four games remaining between the rivals over the next four days in Sacramento.

Midland RHP Chris Jensen turned in another strong start on Thursday, allowing 2 runs while striking out 6 over 7 innings of work, but he still ended up taking the loss on Thursday. Second baseman Conner Crumbliss had 3 hits, drove in a run and stole a base, while Chad Oberacker, filling in at first base, singled, walked and scored the RockHounds’ only run in the loss.

The Ports put up 10 runs in the 2nd inning and 11 runs on the night and cruised to an easy victory on Thursday. Right fielder Tyler Marincov smacked a pair of home runs in the 10-run 2nd and drove in 3, while left fielder Jaycob Brugman singled and slugged a 3-run homer. Second baseman Chad Pinder had 2 doubles and drove in 4, and third baseman Renato Nunez and designated hitter Matt Olson had a pair of hits apiece for the Ports. Starter Tim Alderson allowed 2 runs, just 1 earned, while striking out 7 over 5 innings of work to earn his 5th win for Stockton.

Vermont starter Cristhian Perez was a little shaky on Thursday, allowing 5 runs on 9 hits in just 4 innings of work to take his 5th loss, while LHP Jose Torres surrendered 4 runs in 3 innings of relief for the Lake Monsters. Vermont managed just 5 hits on the night. Designated hitter Yairo Munoz doubled and homered, while left fielder Max Kuhn picked up a pair of singles in the loss.
