The AZL A’s came back from a 4-run deficit to score 5 runs in the 9th to win in a wild one on Monday. This year’s 34th-round draft pick for the A’s, designated hitter John Nogowski, had 4 hits and drove in 3 runs, including one of the key runs in the 9th,and scored the winning win, while first baseman Robert Kuhn doubled in a pair of runs with the bases loaded in the 9th, and catcher Seongmin Kim singled in the tying run for the A’s. Outfielder J.P. Sportman reached base in all 5 plate appearances, on a triple, 2 singles and a pair of walks, while outfielder Jonesy Zarraga had 2 hits and stole a base, and shortstop Edwin Diaz singled, walked, scored twice and drove in a run for the A’s. Starter Jesus Zambrano allowed 5 runs, 3 earned, on 7 hits over 5 innings, while RHP Cody Kurz surrendered 2 runs in 1 inning of relief. LHP Cody Stull gave up 1 run in 2 innings of work but still picked up the win, while RHP Jesus Rivas tossed a scoreless 9th to earn his 1st save for the A’s.

After being down by 3 runs on Monday, the River Cats came back to tie the game up 3-3 only to lose it in the 11th. In his 10th start since returning to Sacramento, RHP Dan Straily surrendered 3 runs on 7 hits, including a home run to Brandon Belt with 2 outs in the 1st, over 6 2/3 innings of work and left with his team down by 2 runs. RHP Philip Humber tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief, while RHP Jeremy McBryde pitched a perfect 9th and 10th, but RHP Paul Smyth surrendered a solo shot to lead off the 11th to take the loss. Designated hitter Anthony Aliotti socked his 1st home run for Sacramento in the 7th to bring the River Cats within a run, while outfielder Shane Peterson doubled and drove in 2 runs in the loss. In other news, RHPs Seth Frankoff and Tucker Healy are set to join Sacramento from Midland on Tuesday.

After being down by 4 runs, the RockHounds put 3 on the board in the 7th but fell just short on Monday. Starter Drew Granier gave up 4 runs, 2 earned, over 5 innings to take his 4th loss, while RHP Murphy Smith allowed just 1 hit and struck out 4 in 4 scoreless innings of relief for the RockHounds. Outfielder Conner Crumbliss tripled in a pair of runs in the 7th to put the Hounds on the board, while catcher Blake Forsythe and designated hitter Hiroyuki Nakajima had a pair of hits apiece, and shortstop Addison Russell singled, walked and made a throwing error in the loss.

Starter Jerad Grundy had another solid outing for the Lake Monsters, allowing 3 runs, just 2 earned, while striking out 6 over 5 innings of work, but he still ended up taking the loss on Monday. Designated hitter Joe Bennie singled, doubled, walked and drove in a pair of runs, while outfielder Scott Masik collected 3 hits, and catcher Andy Paz singled, tripled, walked and scored twice in the loss.

 

In Other News…

Stockton third baseman Renato Nunez was named the California League Player of the Week after going 14 for 31 with 4 doubles, 5 home runs and 9 RBIs last week. Ports teammate Jeremy Barfield has decided to abandon his pitching experiment and return to playing the outfield and swinging the bat. In his time on the mound, Barfield put up a 4.63 ERA and struck out 39 in 35 innings out of the bullpen for the Ports. Meanwhile, A’s minor league LHP Jeff Urlaub underwent season-ending arm surgery on Monday but is expected to be back in action in 2015. Urlaub posted a 2.12 ERA in 29 2/3 relief innings for Midland and Sacramento this season.

The A’s announced they’d signed 5 more draft picks on Monday – #3 RHP Brett Graves, #5 RHP Heath Fillmyer, #7 SS-2B Branden Cogswell, #12 RHP Tyler Willman and #15 2B Trent Gilbert. The A’s have now signed all their top 10 picks and 17 of the team’s top 20. The 3 left unsigned in the top 20 are all college catchers.
