It was center fielder Bobby Crocker’s turn to wield the big bat for Stockton on Tuesday. Crocker singled, doubled, homered and drove in 4 runs, and his 3-run homer in the 3rd inning put the Ports up for good and made it possible for Stockton to win its 8th straight. Catcher Bruce Maxwell also collected 3 hits on the night, while third baseman Renato Nunez and outfielders Billy McKinney and Aaron Shipman had a pair of hits apiece for the Ports. Starter Tim Atherton allowed 4 runs on 9 hits over 5 1/3 innings and picked up his 6th win, while RHP Austin House tossed 2 scoreless innings to post his 10th save.

For his second straight outing, starter Dan Straily surrendered a pair of home runs that proved to be his undoing. Straily had allowed just 1 run until he gave up a solo shot in the 5th and a 2-run blast in the 6th. At the end of the day, he’d allowed 5 runs on 6 hits and struck out 9 over 5 innings of work to take his 3rd loss for Sacramento. The River Cats managed just 4 hits in the game. Third baseman Jose Martinez reached base twice, on a double and a walk, while left fielder Jake Elmore also doubled, and catcher Ryan Ortiz and center fielder Shane Peterson both singled. Meanwhile, catcher Blake Forsythe joined the River Cats roster from Midland, while catcher Ryan Lipkin was placed on the disabled list.

LHP Matt Stalcup had another shaky start for the Snappers on Tuesday, allowing 5 runs on 7 hits over 4 innings to take his 3rd loss. RHP Sam Bragg gave up 1 run in 2 innings of work, while converted infielder Sam Roberts surrendered 1 run in 1 inning of relief, and RHP Bobby Wahl pitched a perfect 8th to close out the loss. Outfielder Jaycob Brugman singled, doubled, homered and scored twice, while the A’s 1st-round draft pick, third baseman Matt Chapman, went 1 for 4 and drove in a run in his debut for Beloit.

Starter A.J. Burke had another solid outing for the Lake Monsters on Tuesday, allowing just 1 run on 4 hits over 5 innings of work. He left the game with a 1-run lead, but the ValleyCats would eventually come back to tie things up and send the game to extra innings. LHP Victor Veliz gave up 3 runs, 2 earned, in 4 1/3 innings of relief, while RHP Jon Massad allowed 1 run in the bottom of the 11th to take the loss. Third baseman Yairo Munoz had 3 hits, while second baseman Joseph Bennie drove in 2 runs, and shortstop Gabriel Santana and outfielders Dayton Alexander and Scott Masik had a pair of hits apiece for Vermont.

 

In Other News…

The Texas League North All-Stars bested the Texas League South All-Stars 3-1 in the Texas League All-Star Game on Tuesday. Five Midland RockHounds representatives participated in the game. Right fielder Josh Whitaker went 1 for 3 and singled in the South’s only run, while shortstop Dusty Coleman and first baseman Max Muncy both went 0 for 3 in the game. RHP Nate Long pitched a perfect 6th, and RHP Seth Frankoff pitched a perfect 8th for the South. Muncy also took second place in the Texas League Home Run Derby.
