Third baseman Renato Nunez had a huge night for the Ports on Monday, collecting 3 doubles and a home run and driving in 4 runs for Stockton. And in his last 5 games since returning from the California League All-Star break, Nunez is 9 for 18 with 3 doubles, 3 home runs and 10 RBIs. Designated hitter Ryon Healy, who’s also been hot since the break, had 4 hits, drove in a pair of runs and scored twice, while left fielder Bobby Crocker singled, doubled and tripled. Herschel Powell made a positive impression in his first game for the Ports. Batting ninth and starting in right field for Stockton, Powell had 3 hits and drove in Crocker in the top of the 10th to provide the winning run for the Ports. Starter Jake Sanchez, acquired from the White Sox in the Michael Taylor trade, allowed 3 runs, 2 earned, on 4 hits while striking out 5 over 6 innings of work in his first appearance for Stockton. RHP Michael Ynoa gave up 3 runs on 4 hits in 1 inning of relief, while LHP Jeremy Barfield picked up the win despite allowing the tying run in the 8th, and RHP Kris Hall pitched a perfect 10th to post his 3rd save. To make room for Powell on the Ports roster, outfielder Dusty Robinson was released.

Designated hitter Nate Freiman smacked 2 home runs for the River Cats on Monday to bring his team-leading total to 14. Catcher Ryan Ortiz had a pair of hits and drove in the tie-breaking run for the River Cats in the top of the 7th. Starter Arnold Leon allowed 2 runs over 5 2/3 innings and left with the game tied. RHP Paul Smyth pitched a perfect 1 1/3 innings in relief to pick up the win, and RHP Evan Scribner tossed a scoreless 9th for his 10th save. Meanwhile, River Cats catcher Ryan Lipkin has been placed on the disabled list and catcher Blake Forsythe has been promoted from Midland to replace him.

RHP Joseph Michaud turned in his second straight strong start for the Lake Monsters on Monday, allowing just 1 unearned run while walking none and striking out 8 over 6 innings of work and left the game with a 1-run lead. LHP Kevin Ferreras gave up 1 run in the 7th to tie the game and RHP Dominique Vattuone surrendered 4 runs in the 8th to take the loss. First baseman Brett Vertigan hit his 1st home run in the 5th to give Vermont the lead, while shortstop Gabriel Santana singled and doubled for the Lake Monsters.

On Monday, LHP Dillon Overton, the A’s 2nd-round pick in the 2013 draft, made his first appearance on the mound since signing with the team and almost immediately undergoing Tommy John surgery a year ago. Overton was sharp in his initial outing, allowing 1 run on 2 hits while walking none, striking out 4 and even picking off a runner in 3 innings of work for the AZL A’s. The 22-year-old struck out the final four batters he faced with his fastball apparently topping out at around 90 mph. This year’s 10th-round pick, RHP Corey Miller, picked up the win despite giving up 2 runs in 3 1/3 innings of relief, while 9th-round pick LHP Mike Fagan allowed 1 run in 1 2/3 innings, and 29th-round pick LHP Cody Stull walked a pair but also struck out the side in the 9th to earn his 1st save. Outfielder Robert Martinez homered for the second straight night, while first baseman John Nogowski doubled in a pair, and third baseman Jose Brizuela singled, doubled and drove in a run for the A’s.

 

In Other News…

After getting in three games in Arizona, this year’s 1st-round draft pick for the A’s, third baseman Matt Chapman, has headed to Beloit to take over the hot corner for the Snappers. This year’s 11th-round pick, RHP Joel Seddon, will be keeping him company there, and RHP Hunter Adkins has also joined the Snappers from Stockton. Beloit relievers Brent Powers and Stuart Pudenz were released on Monday, while starter Dylan Covey was placed on the disabled list.
