RHP Arnold Leon turned in a strong start for Sacramento on Sunday, allowing just 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 5 over 6 innings of work to earn his team-leading 8th win for the River Cats. RHP Fernando Rodriguez pitched 2 perfect innings in relief, while RHP Evan Scribner tossed a scoreless 9th to earn his 11th save. Outfielder Nick Buss delivered the decisive blow for the second straight night, hitting his 4th home run in the 5th inning to break a 1-1 tie. First baseman Anthony Aliotti had a pair of hits filling in for Nate Freiman, who, with A’s outfielder Josh Reddick landing on the disabled list, was promoted to the big club. And Freiman turned out to be the hero for Oakland on Sunday, hitting a 3-run homer in the 6th-inning to put the A’s on top. Meanwhile, infielder Alden Carrithers was activated from the disabled list to take Freiman’s place on the River Cats roster.

With two outs in the bottom of the 10th and the game tied, left fielder Nick Buss bashed a ground-rule double to drive in the winning run and provide the walk-off win for Sacramento on Saturday. Buss had 4 hits on the night, scored twice and stole his 7th base. Designated hitter Anthony Aliotti collected 3 doubles, while center fielder Shane Peterson singled, doubled and drove in 2 runs, and right fielder Josh Whitaker had 2 hits and drove in a pair in his second game for Sacramento. Starter Zach Neal allowed 5 runs, 3 earned, on 11 hits over 5 2/3 innings, while rehabbing LHP Eric O’Flaherty tossed a scoreless 7th. RHP Jeremy McBryde surrendered the tying run in the top of the 9th, and RHP Paul Smyth picked up the win after pitching a perfect 10th for the River Cats. With Sacramento first baseman Nate Freiman scratched from Saturday’s lineup and A’s outfielder Josh Reddick likely to hit the disabled list, expect Freiman to get the call to join Oakland in time for Sunday’s game.

With the game tied in the bottom of the 11th, center fielder Ben McQuown stepped to the plate and, on the the first pitch he saw, slugged his first professional home run to win the game in a walk-off for Vermont on Friday. McQuown also walked, singled twice, scored twice and stole his 3rd base for the Lake Monsters. Left fielder Justin Higley doubled, tripled and drove in 3 runs, while right fielder Dayton Alexander singled doubled and drove in a run, and this year’s 16th-round draft pick for the A’s, third baseman Jose Brizuela, went 0 for 5 in his debut for Vermont. Starter Cristhian Perez allowed 5 runs over 4 innings of work. 2nd-round pick RHP Daniel Gossett gave up 1 run in 2 innings of relief in his first appearance for the Lake Monsters, while 9th-round pick LHP Mike Fagan pitched a perfect 1 2/3 innings in his Vermont debut, and RHP Blake McMullen tossed a scoreless 10th and 11th to pick up the win.

Outfielder Shane Peterson singled, doubled and drove in 3 runs, while first baseman Nate Freiman and designated hitter Colin Walsh had a pair of hits apiece. Starter Josh Lindblom turned in a strong outing for Sacramento, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits over 7 innings and left the game with a 3-run lead. Rehabbing LHP Eric O’Flaherty gave up 2 runs in 2/3 of an inning of relief, while RHP Jeremy McBryde surrendered the tying run in the top of the 9th, and RHP Evan Scribner tossed a scoreless 10th and 11th to pick up his 3rd win for the River Cats. In other news, the A’s signed minor league free agent catcher Luis Exposito and assigned him to Sacramento. The 27-year-old backstop posted a .177/.252/.313 slash line in 29 games this season for Triple-A Toledo. Catcher Blake Forsythe was returned to Midland, while RockHounds outfielder Josh Whitaker is set to join the River Cats roster.

And the 20-year-old is now 15 for 27 with 4 doubles, 5 home runs and 13 RBIs in 7 games since the California League All-Star break. First baseman Matt Olson hit his league-leading 20th home run, while second baseman Wade Kirkland hit his 2nd, while center fielder Herschel Powell tripled in a pair of runs for the Ports. Crocker singled, doubled, homered and drove in 4 runs, and his 3-run homer in the 3rd inning put the Ports up for good and made it possible for Stockton to win its 8th straight. Catcher Bruce Maxwell also collected 3 hits on the night, while third baseman Renato Nunez and outfielders Billy McKinney and Aaron Shipman had a pair of hits apiece for the Ports. Starter Tim Atherton allowed 4 runs on 9 hits over 5 1/3 innings and picked up his 6th win, while RHP Austin House tossed 2 scoreless innings to post his 10th save.

Third baseman Renato Nunez had a huge night for the Ports on Monday, collecting 3 doubles and a home run and driving in 4 runs for Stockton. And in his last 5 games since returning from the California League All-Star break, Nunez is 9 for 18 with 3 doubles, 3 home runs and 10 RBIs. Designated hitter Ryon Healy, who’s also been hot since the break, had 4 hits, drove in a pair of runs and scored twice, while left fielder Bobby Crocker singled, doubled and tripled. Herschel Powell made a positive impression in his first game for the Ports. Batting ninth and starting in right field for Stockton, Powell had 3 hits and drove in Crocker in the top of the 10th to provide the winning run for the Ports. Starter Jake Sanchez, acquired from the White Sox in the Michael Taylor trade, allowed 3 runs, 2 earned, on 4 hits while striking out 5 over 6 innings of work in his first appearance for Stockton. RHP Michael Ynoa gave up 3 runs on 4 hits in 1 inning of relief, while LHP Jeremy Barfield picked up the win despite allowing the tying run in the 8th, and RHP Kris Hall pitched a perfect 10th to post his 3rd save. To make room for Powell on the Ports roster, outfielder Dusty Robinson was released.

Lake Monsters designated hitter Justin Higley pulled off a rare feat on Sunday – an inside-the-park grand slam. And to make things even better, it came with the game tied in the bottom of the 8th inning and provided Vermont with the margin of victory on Sunday. Higley also doubled, walked and scored 3 runs in the game, and he now has 9 extra-base hits and 15 RBIs in his first 10 games this season. Second baseman Joe Bennie had 3 hits and drove in a run, while first baseman Ryan Huck singled, doubled and drove in a pair. Starter Cristhian Perez allowed 4 runs, 3 earned, over 5 innings of work, while RHP Fernando Cruzado picked up the win despite giving up a run in the 9th.

Stockton’s bats continued to boom on Saturday night and center fielder Billy McKinney drove in the decisive go-ahead run in the 7th inning as the Ports came back to win their 5th straight. McKinney hit his 8th home run in the 2nd, singled in 2 runs with the bases loaded in the 7th and drove in another run in the 8th with a sacrifice fly. Designated hitter Ryon Healy had 4 hits, including a pair of doubles, and drove in 3 runs, while second baseman Chad Pinder singled, doubled and scored 3 times. Starter Hunter Adkins was a little shaky for Stockton, allowing 4 runs on 4 hits and 5 walks over 4 2/3 innings, while RHP Josh Bowman gave up 1 run in 3 1/3 innings of relief to pick up his 1st win for the Ports.

A big night from designated hitter Renato Nunez helped Stockton overcome an early 4-run deficit and best Bakersfield on Friday. Nunez collected 3 hits in the game, and he homered for the second straight night to put the Ports on the board in the 4th. He then singled in the tying run in the 5th, and also drove in a pair of runs in Stockton’s 5-run 6th. Thursday night’s hitting star, first baseman Matt Olson, drew 3 walks, while outfielders Dusty Robinson and Billy McKinney and second baseman Chad Pinder had a pair of hits apiece and each drove in a run for the Ports. Starter Chris Lamb had a rare rough outing, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits over 4 innings of work, while LHP Omar Duran struck out 5 in 2 innings of scoreless relief to pick up his 1st win for Stockton.
