After looking solid in his first start for Sacramento, LHP Carlos Hernandez had a much rougher time of it in his second outing, allowing 8 runs, 6 earned, on 11 hits over just 3 innings to take the loss on Monday. Catcher Ryan Ortiz had 3 hits, including a home run, and scored twice for the River Cats.

First baseman Matt Olson had a big night at the plate, collecting 2 doubles and a home run while driving in 3 runs, including the go-ahead run in the 3rd inning. Second baseman Chris Bostick had 3 hits, including his 14th home run, and drove in 2 runs, while outfielder Brett Vertigan singled, tripled, walked twice and drove in a pair. Starter Derek De Young had a shaky outing for the Snappers, allowing 5 runs on 7 hits over 5 innings but still ended up posting the win, while RHP Austin House got the final 3 outs to pick up his 8th save.

Starter Kyle Finnegan had another strong outing on Monday, allowing just 1 unearned run while walking none over 5 innings of work to earn his 3rd win for Vermont. Third baseman Ryon Healy hit a 2-run homer in the 1st inning, and outfielder B.J. Boyd hit a 3-run homer in the 2nd inning to provide all the offense the Lake Monsters would need.

Rehabbing RHP Ryan Doolittle had another solid outing on Monday, allowing just 1 hit over 3 scoreless innings for the A’s. 17-year-old shortstop Edwin Diaz had a pair of doubles, walked, drove in a run and scored a run, while outfielder Justin Higley singled, tripled and drove in a run, and outfielder Billy McKinney singled in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 9th inning. RHP Joseph Michaud picked up the win after having gotten the final out in the top of the 9th for the A’s.

  1. Note to writer of this update. Always enjoy them. But note this, when Billy McKinney knocks in the “go-ahead run” in the bottom of the ninth, it’s more than the “go-ahead” run, it’s the “winning” run. Write it that way. Also guard against lazy habits of being wordy … example .. So and So got the win with six solid innings “of work.” “Of work” are almost always excess baggage, needless words. Sort of like “new” record. Yeah, it just happened, so it goes without saying it’s “new.” Of course, in the grand tradition of live sports broadcasts it NEVER goes without saying. It’s always said. Just as the whatever inning doesn’t ever simply “end.” It “comes to an end.” After all why say something in one word if you can take four to say the same thing instead?
