Third baseman Scott Moore smacked his 9th home run in the 5th inning to give the River Cats the lead, and he also collected a double and a single and scored twice. Designated hitter Grant Green tagged a 2-run homer to put the Cats on the board in the 1st, and first baseman Daric Barton had a pair of doubles and drove in a run. Starter Justin Thomas allowed 3 runs on 6 hits over 5 innings and left the game with a 1-run lead, but it didn’t last long. LHP Hideki Okajima came on to give up 4 runs in 1 inning of relief to take the loss.

First baseman Jake Goebbert had another big day at the plate, doubling, tripling and driving in a pair of runs for the RockHounds. But starter Zach Neal had a rocky outing on Wednesday, allowing 6 runs on 9 hits over 5 2/3 innings to take his 5th loss.

The LakeMonsters lost their 3rd straight game to start the season, while many of this year’s draft picks made their debuts for Vermont. The A’s 12th overall draft pick, LHP Jerad Grundy, allowed 3 runs, 2 earned, in 1 2/3 innings to take the loss, while the team’s 11th overall pick, LHP Matt Stalcup, followed up with 1 1/3 perfect innings in relief. Vermont was held to just 5 hits on the night. Outfielder B.J. Boyd, singled, walked and stole a base, while the A’s 3rd overall pick, shortstop Chad Pinder, 10th pick, outfielder Tyler Marincov, and 19th pick, outfielder Jaycob Brugman, combined to go 0 for 12 in their debuts.
